At first i didn't like it much, but when i thought about it, i think it's a good name. it stands out, and is a word that doesn't have a common double-meaning (like a latin dance!)

Hey I thought Mambo was a stupid name for a CMS, I think joomla is completely ridiculous. I actually laughed out load in the middle of my office when I found out the name, what on earth were they thinking.
Anyway the name really dosnt affect me in anyway, as long as the development continues the same as Mambo it dosnt really matter.
hehehehehehehe joomla, its still making me chuckle.

Joomla as a name is more than a bit silly, but then I'm probably thinking as a native English speaker and ignorant of that fact that it works for the other 95% of the world's population.
On the bright side none of my clients know or give a damn which CMS runs their websites, they just care that it works, although I must admit that I'll be hiding a smile if they ask.

Re: Do you like "Joomla!" as new project name?
It is an interesting name, that is hard to use at first, but with anything , the more you use it the easier it gets, It was not what I expected, but I am not sure I even know what I truly expected. I am more interested in the project and the good work that has been done up to now, than I am in the name. With time the name will make sense and people will be OK with it, the important thing is that the Joomla project stays focused and keeps doing what they do best, put out great software, and that they have a community that will stand behind them.

The name still chimes a little funny in my head, but so did the name mambo back in the day. I'm sure the name will grow on me as Joomla replaces mambo (in my head). I very much agree with others on the fact that the name of the system doesn't truly matter all too much... As long as the dev team continues to put out a great system, the 3rd party developers will continue to put out things & we will be happy.

Re: Do you like "Joomla!" as new project name?
I've had a day to try and get used to the new name.
I've tried it out on friends and colleagues to get feedback.
And after many raised eyebrows and negative remarks, I've ended up concluding that it is a stupid name.
And to round things off - the addition of the exclamation mark at the end of the name is just the final nail on the silliness coffin.
If this was the best name that we could come up with, I'd hate to have seen the other names that missed out in the final selection.
Sorry for being so negative. Maybe I just loved the never-to-be-said again *m* name so much. It was such a cute and cuddly name. But I thought we could have come up with a far far better name than joomla. (sod it if i'm writing an exclamation mark every time i write the word)

Yeah, I'm finding the power of association cool too... hehehe
Freaky that so many don't like it though. BIG .um, bummer?
or maybe as a lot of millionaires say, 'could be good'.
OK I'm being obtuse!

Re: Do you like "Joomla!" as new project name?
I understand that for the English speaking world, Joomla is no where to be found in the repertoire. As such, it is strange and without an anchor in the psyche. Maybe association can play a role in creating that anchor. In Arabic, it is a rather powerful word: a sentence, a declaration..... a STATEMENT.
Think of it this way: Content is a Statement, and Joomla! empowers you to make that statement. It empowers all to make a statement. That is enough of a mission for a CMS in my opinion.
I hope this early uneasiness with the name will dissipate with time.

Re: Do you like "Joomla!" as new project name?
Bad choice. Joomla: it sound childish. Nothing serious in it. Nothing PRO in it. In some language as I managed to read all that was already written even stupid.
As a marketing guy I can say that a name is a vital part of a product and in this case is badly chosen. Could be simply Star CMS, just for example. Joomla sounds like an exclamation of a drunk viking or an exclamation when siting next to a good food. I'm tooooooooootaly disappointed.
The name is a crucial part of a marketing strategy, ...and beside who care about Swahili??? How many of you actually speak Swahili (if I recollect well Joomla is in Swahili). There is almost a science how to pick a good and a right name called marketing. And I believe that among us are good marketing guys who could pick a perfect name for **mbo.
This is not a good start >:(

Re: Do you like "Joomla!" as new project name?
All this name disliking is a very sad thing. I REALLY wish there was a solution. Just wanna make sure everyone possible comes this way and it looks like the names a bit on the 'majority don't like it' side...
Maybe another name is forthcoming and it'll help the swing even more.
Well, I can hope right!?

Re: Do you like "Joomla!" as new project name?
heh, its a weird name. I definately thought wtf at first, but after a while it grew on me. I'm definately no marketing expert, but I think a name only gets people in the door. Its the product itself that keeps folks around. So... I'll be sticking around.
Re: Do you like "Joomla!" as new project name?
It's just a brand name. It neither bothers me or makes me feel good.
I mentioned to a member of staff today that the software we are going to move our web site over to is call Joomla! and they spilt their coffee, exclaming, "What?!!!" I spent the rest of the day calling it a content management system and no one questioned that so that's what I'll call it for now, a CMS.

It is not a good name. It is not business like at all. It is not PRO.
But heck, if they could just remove the exclamation point it would at least be bearable :-)
This exclamation point is outright silly and gives potential ambiguities in writing. It makes every sentence ending with Joomla! look as an exclamation. And as every writer willl know, too many exclamations weakens a text considerably.

Re: Do you like "Joomla!" as new project name?
I do not think the Dev Team knew that it meant something in Swahili or Arabic when they picked it. I even think they went out of their way to pick something entirely new and something to grow and be known as the CMS everyone has been hoping for. There is actually a thread asking what the name meant in different languages. However, if it did mean something, especially if it did mean something as nicely fitting as it did, it only strengthens it.dorjano wrote: The name is a crucial part of a marketing strategy, ...and beside who care about Swahili??? I like to fix things. I like fixing up sites. I would like to FIX this name thing. It feels REALLY serious actually. Easy to go hey, it's cool. My concern is the thousands upon thousands that don't know what we know.
Could we actually fix this? Is there anyone that LOVES the name? Am I being naive and foolish or as in my life I've done hundreds of times can this be pulled out of what some may call 'the fire'.
Or is it a case of too big to move the other way or something.
Respectfully. my fledgling thoughts for a FIX.
