Why not call it TANGO SERVER?

Post by holycow » Sat Sep 03, 2005 6:01 pm

Hi.

Just out of curiosity ... why didn't you guys name the project something a little more 'friendly' sounding?

For example:

TANGO SERVER
TANGO CMS

SALSA SERVER
SALSA CMS

I understand the value of using an exotic word that has never been used in a business sense, but ... I will never  be able to walk into the clients office and tell them they are using JOOMLA! CMS Server.

I mean no offense, I completely agree with your fork and reasoning behind that and support you guys, but I simply CANNOT use anything called JOOMLA.  It sounds silly, and it has the smell of "I will haveto explain the Swahili meaning of the word EVERY SINGLE TIME I mention the word Joomla".

Okay, with that being said, let me also acknowledge that the motivation of this post is greed, and I acknowledge your freedom to have as much fun as possible with the project.  I think it's great you have the guts to name a project something rather silly, and it I think I can even see it as sounding fun - certainly from a freshmeat.net perspective you will never forget the name.  And you do have my suggestions above to ridicule, I thought to at least offer some options (which you probably considered seeing as they are logical tangents in terms of relationships between the two projects) so that I don't sound like a whiny bitch!  Anyway the question is still valid from a marketing perspective.

On a related tangent, naming the project the CHACHACHA CMS SERVER would be a sillier name than yours, but I haveto admit, I'd KILL to be in a business meeting where I had to pitch the CHACHACHA server just to see the clients expression!!!!!!

:-)

Anyway, go guys, you should rethink your name choice, it isn't a very good one - just because Ubuntu got away with it doesn't mean you can.

Our minimum criteria when we looked at the Name choice is posted by other of the team here:

Both Tango and Salsa failed.
Salsa particularly as there is already a CMS project called Salsa:

It was simply not possible to use such generic and common names like Tango and Salsa with already somany existing products that use these names.

After extensive surveying of the names "Tango" and "Salsa" in IRC, the overwhelming conclusion was that those names were seen to be very "ghey".  :D
