Experience/Advice Sought: Building a J/E Site in Joomla

Thank you in advance. I am @ the moment looking at building a multi-language site using Joomla. Does anyone have any feedback about using the English version of Joomla to build a Japanese site. Some other places in the forum said that it might cause some problems. Any feedback you can provide for a new Joomla user would be great. Thank you!
