LOGO: meerkat (aka Surikate)

Post by Luciano » Sat Sep 10, 2005 3:04 pm

This is an grtfercho's original idea. He sent me a PM last night about it.

Please read below:
grtfercho wrote: Hi Luciano
I've seen your work on the forum and I recon you have great skills.

Me on the other side have zero, not enough to post something worth while...

however I came up with an idea while driving to work.

The meerkat is a mammal that lives in Africa and that works and lives in communities. While some gather for food others keep an eye open for predators. When the adults need to gather food from distant places some stay behind to take care of all the offspring.

Another peculiar thing about this nice animals is the posture they have when looking out for the group, they stand on their back legs and the tail serves as a third leg ...

Check this picture
http://members.limitless.org/~suricata/meerka04.jpg

and this one right here...
http://members.limitless.org/~suricata/meerka05.jpg

Can you see the "J" forming??

SInce you have this great drawing talent I thought of suggesting the idea to you in hopes that you can create something based on this cute animal.....

I mean the J is there !!! is right there!
http://members.limitless.org/~suricata/meerka50.jpg

give it a try if you can....

The meerkat (scientific name: Suricata suricate) is a close relative of the Indian mongoose and also related to the American Prairie Dog. They live in areas of southern Africa in savannahs, plains or deserts in colonies of 25 - 40 individualswhich are divided into several family groups. Normaly a colony stays together, but sometimes, when a colony has grown too big, young meerkats may move to another.
In plains meerkats mostly dig big burrows for their shelter, but in rocky terrain they prefer to live in rock clefts.(In Swahili 'suricate' means 'Rock Cat') You can find them in many different colors. They appear in tan, sandy, grey, yellow and even black/white and orange.
...

Well, I think this is a great idea, you can read more about Suricate here:
http://www.lionking.org/~ahau/M_Main.html

I did somethig this morning:

Image

Tell us what you think about it.

If anyone wanna try this too, lets rock!

Hugs.

Luciano this is great. thanks for creating this.
Do you think you can show a Meerkat standing while keeping an eye? I love the natural way the J forms in their backs and tails..

I truly think this is the best idear of all. Great concept!!
What does it look like as a favicon I wonder. Also those orange collors, isn't there a better collor, maybe soft yellow or something? Orange still is a *ambo collor in my mind...

I gess the "J" tail will be too strait, and all art can loose power, but yes, I will try it.

The meerkat idea works fine for Joomla because colony and colaborative habits.

Dont care if "J tail" wont work! the meerkat is a nice idea with or without tail!

Luciano: With my respects and your permission. I had to give it a try with the graphics you presented.

I think that the Meerkat and the fact that they look out for each other reflects what Joomla! as a project is.

After all the very basic reason why Joomla! was created was  because the Core developers took upon themselves to look out for the greater benefit of the community. To me the meerkats just make sense at  so many different levels.

1. Community.
2. Friendly and supportive of each other.
3. Under harsh conditions they prevail.
4. They are agile and  intelligent animals.
5. They come from Africa like the name Joomla!.
6.  When they stand on their two back legs I can see a J all the time.(this is my favorite but others disagree)

Now, up to point four I wasn't sure if I was writing about the meerkats or the joomla! community :) :) we are very similar, with the exception that we don't eat bugs.

Well, here are a couple hacks to Luciano's original design.
If somebody feels this is breaking any rules please let me know and I'll remove the graphics.....

The fact is:  a few heads think and act better than one.

if someone has a good idea but cant realize it (no skills, resources, etc...) we must colaborate since we are a community.

The result of this work goes to all of us.

In my opinon a "competiton" isn't the better way to develope a colaborative work.

there is no "PRIZE" here.

At the end, everybody will win.

Sorry if someone dont agree about my point of view.

Well, I like the simpler design more. And I wish people would stop asking about favicons; they're not so hard to create from a logo; for example, here is one I (very) quickly made to make sure it would work. You can do a lot with 256 pixels. ;)

Excellent job, Luciano.

I've  gotta say, along with peek's hands I like the cool cat meerkats.  The shades make me laugh, too.  They're great!  Luciano, you've got a potential winner here.  I'd love to see what you come up with if you keep playing with the concept, too.  ;D

Interesting how the design involving a family of animals that work together within their families, involved a greater family to create it !

I didn't see the "Tshirt" logo last time, that's hillarious, how you mentioned the tshirt guy.....

Anyhow the Shades on the Meerkats are awesome, they look great. They remind me of the movie MIB Men In Black, I guess in this case it should be Meerkats in Black though :) :)

The favicon from divineCHaos resizes nicely too.

I'ev got to say that I really like this as well.  It will reproduce well, it looks good in greay scale as well, which is essential in a really well desinged logo.  I'd be interested in seeing how it reduces to b&w line art.

I'd definitely buy a T-Shirt or a mug with those little guys on their.  I think it speaks to the community aspects and the origins of the name as well.

I think the work now needs to concentrate on the type style.

Defintely my favorite so far!  :)

I actually liked a few of the text-only renditions for logo submissions, and would suggest that those who designed them couple their work with the meerkats, and see what they can't contribute to this thread.

yes I agree, to be honnest my work was too short, just realized (not finished) a few ideas at this point. come'on people, lets work together,  this is the "forge's soul"!

As said before, I think the "competition" is not the best way to get the best result - my opinion.

This job need more than 5 ou 6 days to realize it, but this was a developers crew decision.

If we have 1 more week, everybody working together, ideas and graphics, certainly we will get the best result ever!

at now we can see really great posts, but will be nice to see the best ideas add to better representation, without issues like "-hey dude, this is my idea, not nice to see at your art, thief!" or "-hey nerd, this is my graphic element, please remove it from your logo please!"

By the way, we have great ideas and great graphics here since last wed. The developers crew have a harder than rock decision here!
I hope the top 5 finalists makes everybody happy!

A truly great idea but Meerkat is an O'Reilly open news wire service that has already been incorporated into Zope. Might create confusion.

Don't think so. Especially considering it's the ensignia (logo), and not the name (Joomla). Additionally, Meerkat at O'Reilly has the ugliest logo ever. They look like Muppets on crack!

Anyhow, I think we'll be alright. This logo is too great to let something like that stop us; worst case, let's just call 'em "Surikates" instead.  8)

Thanks for the heads-up,

Meerkats show great mental capabilities and learn fast. Though small, they pack huge brain power. Meerkats know, by instinct, that they must use teamwork, or else they won't make it. All meerkats, when they grow up, posess enough information to teach someone else to be a contributing member to any meerkat colony (though they usually stay at home).

The above is a description from Meerkat.org

The logo is freakin' great - colors are also perfect.

Go with it. You will not find any animal that someone has not used in some way. This logo is unique though. I love it.
