Post by ruptan » Sun Jun 03, 2007 7:01 am

I am getting the following errors when a user gets registered for the first time. Does anyone have a clue? My website is http://www.softestclub.com . Thanks

Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/softestc/public_html/components/com_smf_registration/smf_registration.php on line 287

Looks like you have SMF and Joomla in two different databases and the databases users don't have access to each others databases.

Hi ruptan
i checked your site now and see an SMF bridge.
In general bridging two different web softwares is not a good idea.

I recommend you the fireboard plugin of joomla instead of SMF
and problems of bridging 2 different softwares.

here you can see the fireboard demo on their official site

And why not exactly?

SMF is far more powerful and at this stage, much better than fireboard

it is true that smf is more powerful than fireboard.
Joomla and smf are standalone packages, which are developed
independently and both parties do not care what the other party cares.
For every security release of either softwares upgrading without confliction
is difficult.
Both softwares are reliable as possible but bridges are made by independent
coders, in which it needs time to understand their vulnerabilities.
Mostly bridges make small/big hacks on the core of one party software.
This sometimes causes malfunctions especially while making upgrades and
using previous stable backups.
From joomla and smf forums i learned that most of the attacks are made to
bridges by bad guys.
For these reasons i use joomlaboard or fireboard.
One the functionality i love at fireboard or joomlaboard is reviewing the post
of the user before putting it on the my site.

Just to point out, Orstio's SMF Bridge, available at simplemachines.org, does not modify the core code of EITHER software package, and Orstio is a developer himself at SMF...  Since it makes no changes to the core code of either software, upgrading is just as easy as if you didn't have it.  Backups will work regardless as well.  I have yet to find where anyone has successfully hacked into Joomla or SMF due to a security issue with either the JoomlaHacks Bridge or Orstio's bridge.  Can you point me to one such topic?  Sure there have been security vulnerabilities in components released for Joomla, and mods released for SMF, but again, I've yet to see a current version bridge be the cause of one.

If anything, a fully integrated forum like JoomlaBoard for example, would pose more of a security risk than a bridged forum where the functions used to bridge the software is quite minimal in comparision.

I'm not trying to debate with you about which product is better, but if you're going to make generalized statements about modifications to software, don't you think you should have your ducks all in a row first?

Yeap i know Orstio and his bridge
he is one the best bridge developers, in philosophy he never wants
to crack or hack any software packages for bridging.

I personally do not prefer such bridge solutions.
Templating is another matter that needs extra modification for every
software upgrades.
Managing 2 different softwares at one site is extra problem
especially with different permission rights of users.
Preparing ads mod to google indexing, url standartization to SEO works
and many etc... are overheads at site management.

Without these needs of course it is a great pleasure to have 2 different or more
softwares at one site.

For me if there was no solution like fireboard or joomlaboard my address would probably
be Drupal, or e107 in some cases.

Hi,
Thanks all for your reply. I personally like to set up joomla and SMF in separate database and do not mind the bridge, if its a good one. I am using the joomla-smf bridge v1.1.7. Not sure about Ortio. I have tried the joomlahack version of 2.0.2 and that was not working right for me.
On another note...is there anyway we can propose Joomla and SMF to work together and create a bridge that will be working great and may be we can throw in Community Builder as well there.
I think that will be great for all of us and the internet community. Let me know what you guys think about it.

Hello all,
I have solved the problem...it was happening because I did not permit Joomla and SMF to log into each others database. Now its all working. Thanks
