Newbie question regarding language pack?

Post by leenark » Thu Jul 12, 2007 9:59 pm

Hi all,

I am designing a site for NGO using Joomla which needs bilingual language support. I need to have in English and Kannada language.
I know currently Joomla doesnot have kannada language pack. what is the best way to do it without when there is no language pack?
Has anybody done their site in Kannada?
I read about Joomfish component, I did install that. Currently my site only shows En. Sorry for asking this dumb Q, but I am new to Joomla and havenot used language support before.
Your inputs are appreciated.

Thanks,
Leena

What you need to do is make a language pack first for Kannada,
the language pack consists of mainly three files - english.php , english.ignore.php , english.xml or in you case they would be kannada.php , kannada.ignore.php , kannada.xml ..

The kannada.php file contains the actual translations.

Vish has a neat guide on how to do that here > http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic ... #msg154068

Joomla supports Unicode and therefore supports Kannada too, so to start writing kannada text all you need to do is get yourself a Unicode Text Editor for Kannada.

You can get a lot of info on how to enable your PC to view and Write Kannada on the
Kannada Wikipedia Page > http://kn.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Kannada_Support

Beside that, if you want to have BOTH english and kannada versions of the same page, then you need JoomFish to help out.

Check out http://unric.org/ , where the whole site content is translated into 14 languages.. and selecting any language changes all the content to that language..

Check out JoomFish User Guide for more > http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsre ... rGuide.pdf

Design is totally separated from language, except when dealing with right-to-left languages versus Left-to-right.

Therefore you can design your site and later on create your language pack to enter content.
