6. Granularity of responsibilities

Post by scrut » Thu Mar 23, 2006 12:12 pm

Most organizations have more than one person responsible for the content of a site. It should be possible to define that a certain editor is responsible ONLY for pages x, y and z (or a set of pages or a tree of pages). So when he logs into the system, all he can see (all he can edit) are those pages. It should also be possible to define that while editor1 is responsible for pages x and y, he is only responsible for their english versions while editor2 is responsible for the french version of pages x, y and also z. publisher1, on the other hand, is responsible for pages w, x, y and z in both languages. And so on.
As I said before: if an editor is only responsible for a subset of the content, he should ONLY see that content after logging in! Anything else will confuse him. Keeping it simple is very important! If a secretary of a small firm is responsible only for the “news” section of a site, all she should see after logging in is the “news” sections – and the controls she needs to edit this section. If she sees more, she will get confused.
The admin should be able to assign the right to “create a new page” or “delete page” or stuff like that to those publishers or editors, too.

Will be possible with the refinement of ACL in Joomla 1.2.

Take a look at BAM and JACL plus

Not quite what you are after, but until the Team releases 1.2 (and we are still waiting for 1.1, so you are probably taking many moons from now) it's the best way to get that granularity.

Are there any signs of these features in Joomla 1.5?

No signs of that in 1.5.

A bit more diggin through the forums and I found a few posts relating to this topic. Aparently 1.5 has laid the groundwork for ACL, but it won't be developed for quite some time. One pretty vague estimate is for Joomla 2.0 which is estimated for summer 2007. Fingers crossed then!
