"Graphics" button in Control Panel

Post by DesignGuy » Sun Sep 03, 2006 5:51 am

Make it more intutive for folks to change out JPEGS and GIFS. Templates need to be updatable FROM the Control Panel, not the end-around approach you're taking now.

Could you explain what you mean by that..?
Once a site is live, how often will a template be changed?

In many cases, it's short-sighted to treat the "template" as a piece of clip art which once chosen from a library of 20,000 others, is implemented and cemented into place.

Usability is one thing - it should stay consistent over a period of time in order for the visitor to familiarize him/herself with the site.

Design of the graphics, however, is an ideal place to do a LOT of communicating with the visitor.

Bear with me for one minute here:

See television for example: all major networks know that NON-VERBAL communication (and unwritten in this case) actually communicates 90% of the message. HOW you say something - inflection, tone, mood - is equally if not more important than the words themselves.

"Yeah right" can be interpreted in many ways, but boild down to either 1) Agreement - yes, you are right; or 2) Sarcasm - no, you're off-base.

Graphics act as your inflection on a website. The words are much more effective when you can couple them with emphasis - whether it's a less-is-more approach like my tiny site, or fancy them up with dripping graphics and animation.

It's popular to say "don't muck up your site with graphics which slow down load-time," yet these are the same people who would rather play one video game over the other not because it's not smartly written and throught through, but because the graphics - the tone set by the producers is great on one (special effects, etc) and crap on another.  Sometimes, the experience - the TOTAL experience - is worth waiting for. Sometimes, of course, it's absolutely not.

So my point is, I would like to be able to change out graphics I create on the fly.  If I buy a template (which I have), I want to be able to - FROM the CONTROL PANEL, NOT through a WYSIWYG editor, change a frippin JPEG or GIF out on the top nav, a background graphic, or whatever.

When we have a snow day at the local school or a birthday for one of our teachers, wouldn't it be great if I could snag a graphic or a photo of the teacher blowing out candles, drop it in the top panel in 30 seconds (after sizing it aprpopriately and preparing it for publishing)?

Unless with your great experience you can show me what I, as a 30-day-Newbie am missing, I see that what's missing in Joomla! is an easy way to, once a "template" is created, change-out graphics (on the Top Navbar, not meaning buttons, but the very top - VERY IMPORTANT REAL ESTATE), with ease.

I tend to write a lot, so thanks for bearing with me--hope I made sense. Please, please correct me if I'm off base?  I'd prefer being wrong, to tell you the truth!

Still reading up on Joomla 101 and 201,  -John

No pb, you'll soon find out that for most everything, there is in fact a solution (extension) in Joomla ;)

Thanks mon ami. That's why I ask. Better to look stupid and ask than to be stupid and never find out. ;)
