category list, listing custom data

i need to list on the category list a custom field, that field gets a part of the article text that contains a text date, i need it to be listed on the category list like "will happen" or "already happend"
just that
so i can list events that happend or are goin to happen.
that value is inserted by a normal user, on the article text, so... can i do this ?
