Cannot delete menu items

A trashed menu item is still displayed as menu link by the category manager with ‘state’ set to ‘trashed’. In the trash manager the trash bin seems to be empty. Why cannot I not see the trashed menu item in the trash bin? How can I permanently delete the menu item if it does not show up in the trash bin?
Sorry if this has been dealt with elsewhere - I couldn't find anything via the search. this is my first visit to a Joomla forum.

Same problem, trashed menu items won't go away even when the trash is emptied for both content and menu items.
