external links lead to a 404 error

As a followup, to show how badly this is broken, I created an "external link" defined only as "blog". No http:// nothing. Just "blog".

You would reasonably expect this to fail as an "external link".

Yet Joomla spits out http://mydomain.com/blog

WTF???

Could you bring a link to your site an tell us if it was working fine before? Worst thing it coukd happen is that you have to re-install :-P

See the previous post. The site works perfectly except for external links. There is no way I should have to re-install.

By the way this can be easily replicated on a fresh Joomla install.

Here is a dummy server you can see this on. This is a free hosting account I'm not using for anything so poke around.

This is the THIRD server I have replicated this on today alone.

This is a fresh install of joomla 1.5.20

ALL settings are at default. htaccess file is default.

***nothing* has been edited other than creating a menu item in "Top Menu" called "TEST".

As you can see when you log in, it is configured to link to "www.wordpress.com".

Yet that is not the URL that Joomla 1.5.20 is generating. Obviously Joomla 1.5.20 is broken out of the box when it comes to external link menu items.

Or obviously the instructions are wrong.

Which is it? Anybody???

Log in as "admin", password "test".

Blog by itself would not be a valid external link, of course that would not work. You need to give a full protocol for any external link. That's how the web works. If you just make a link without a protocol it puts it relative to the base of the domain.

Problem solved. I had left out the ":" - yes, I'm an idiot and I'm going to take a long vacation and clear my head.

I am getting the same error 404. The address typed into Joolma's Menu setting under External like is > www.pro-endeavors.com/jobboard/ but it's coming out as >http://www.pro-endeavors.com/www.pro-en ... /jobboard/

You have to include the "http://" when defining the link. If you do that it should work.

I found the solution of this error trying to hard.

if any body found this type of error pl check the article it is published and pending then try to put the creation date and publishing date should be same.

pl check the system date also.

it would be solve the error.

I am having the same problem but have another menu that is using the external link option and is fine - why cant I do it for another? ugggg! WHAT IS UP? is it that it is a subdomain?

Please let me know the exact steps to fix this issue.

Steps to recreate issue: I have created one article and included one external link in it. Also saved the the article after this modification. But when I click on the respective article page it is displaying
http://DOMAINNAME/index.php/%5C%22EXTERNALLINK%5C%22

Error: Same error 404 error
Category not found

You may not be able to visit this page because of:
an out-of-date bookmark/favourite
a search engine that has an out-of-date listing for this site
a mistyped address

Please let me know the exact solution to fix the issue. I have tried almost all the options mentioned above
