Mehdi's Bridge Installation Instructions Advice

Post by jezthomas » Fri Jun 29, 2012 7:23 am

I'm looking to use Mehdi’s bridge to integrate joomla and phpbb and am struggling to understand the instructions. I've searched all over the forum, and have emailed mehdi for advice, but there seem to be a lot of people asking questions and not many answers.

From the instructions on the mehdi bridge website,
http://www.mehdiplugins.com/misc/phpbbjoom.htm
I have reached number 3 – Install joomla component. It says install it in joomla’s backend, and then , ‘create an "External link" Item that directly point to your phpbb install (example: http://www.mysite.com/phpbb/).’.
I’m guessing that this means that from Extension Manager I want to use the Install from URL option? Or is this create an external link something completely different, that I have to do after the installation?

From my joomla admin page for my site, I choose Extensions from the menu, then Install/Uninstall.
I then use the url http://localhost/joomla15sample/phpbb3/ which points to where phpbb is installed.
I get the message :
Unknown Archive Type
Warning: file_put_contents(/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/joomla15sample/tmp/) [function.file-put-contents]: failed to open stream: Is a directory in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/joomla15sample/libraries/joomla/filesystem/file.php on line 304

Any ideas what this means and how I can resolve it?

Thanks for your help,

Jez

You might take a look here: http://help.joomla.org/content/view/1476/97/

You must install the Joomla component. Under "Upload Package File" click browse then select the file you downloaded (com_some_component.zip) and install.

Create an "external link" is an option to select when creating a new "menu" item. Item type. That new menu item that you create will manage the link to your forum.

Two separate steps.

jezthomas,

I think you are over thinking the directions: to create an external link item, from the Joomla backend, navigate to Menus > [ select the menu you want to add the link to ] > Add New Menu Item

Choose External Link as the Menu Item Type and then enter the URL to where your phpBB is installed. After you have done this, move on to the next step.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help and advice guys.
Still not cracked it; I am now doing upload file & install but getting a new error:
Warning! Failed to move file.
JFolder::create: Could not create directory
Unable to create destination

Something that concerns me is that the zip file I'm browsing to is only 2kb in size; is it feasible that it can be this size or am I having some kind of download problem perhaps? I have tried several downloads but the file is always the same size.
Other than that, I can't see what else could be going wrong.

Any thoughts or tips I might try?

Thanks guys,

Jez
