[NOT BUG]read more, popular, polls, and latest news links are broken.

Post by finius_lyn » Mon Dec 31, 2007 4:42 pm

I have seen this issue before with several others on this forum.  I have not seen anyone post about this issue (I may have simply overlooked this) with the same setup as I have, as the usual fix has seemed to be upgrading to php5, which I already have on the server.

I am running a linux server with php 5 and mysql 4.1

I performed a clean install with the latest nightly build

I have not moved the htaccess file over

I have fully tested the mod redirect ability of the server and it works correctly

I have all of the SEF settings turned off

Testing Site URL:  www.illumiknight.com

ISSUE:
after a clean install without error all of the links within the main body of the site lead to a 404 page.
Specifically, the read more links, 'popular' links, 'latest news' links, lead to a 404 page.
The links along the menu boxes on the left (main menu, resources, key concepts) all work fine.

Interestingly, the following 2 url's are both labeled "Joomla! Overview":
from 'Main Menu' box (working link) - http://www.illumiknight.com/index.php?o ... &Itemid=27
from 'popular' box (non functional link) - http://www.illumiknight.com/joomla-over ... &Itemid=27

If anyone has information about this issue, please let me know.  I appreciate your assistance in advance.

Can't replicate here. SEF off. htaccess on or off.
I take as example the Overview link in Popular

Your site: http://www.illumiknight.com/joomla-over ... &Itemid=27

First off, thanks for helping.

SEF is off
htaccess is off

the link that you listed from my site is the broken link that you can see on the front page within the 'popular' list.  I listed a second link to the same article, which can be seen on the home page within the 'main menu' menu.  Both links should point to the "Joomla! Overview" article.

I hope that this answered your questions.

I suggest you reinstall by overwriting by FTP or, better, CPanel unzip, latest nightly.

Have you tried enabling .htaccess, all sef on as well as sef plugin enabled?

BTW: It is normal that the Menu Item link to the Overview Article be different. It will also be different if SEF is on.

Thanks again.  I have more information for you below.

Installed from latest nightly build without any change to function or errors.

I get the following functionality with each modification:

I have enabled the .htaccess file
With the htaccess file turned on, instead of going to the 404 page, the originating page is simply reloaded.  In this case, the URL of the link that was clicked is displayed in the address bar.  This basically means that the home page is continuously reloaded when non-menu links are clicked.

With all SEF turned on:  Instead of a 404 page (or reloaded page with htaccess on) when clicking on a link, I get a default joomla template page (blank except for template elements such as menus, headers, footer).

With SEF URLs turned off, even with the other SEF elements turned on, I go to the 404 page (without htaccess) or the reloaded page (with htaccess).

The SEF plugin is enabled by default.  Changing the plugin from active to deactive does not change any of the above functionality.
Thanks again!

How crazy, I'm having the exact same issue. I am running on PHP 5 and MYSQL 4.1 as well. I've tried the same things as you have to no avail. Started fresh 3 times with the same outcome. I've sort of run out of ideas....

My current  setup is the following:

PHP 5.0.5
MYSQL 4.1.20
APACHE 1.3

crashgab.com

I have tried all of the above mentioned possibilites with the same outcome, all links within the menus work fine, any link outside of the menus (read more, etc.) lead to 404 errors.

mericleman -

I'd like you to look through this document, closely, and see if any of those instructions are helpful.

If you find that nothing in there helps you to resolve your problems, there is a list of ten questions that are helpful to others if you provide the answers. That way, we have a good idea of what we can rule out.

So, read the document. If it helps you fix the problem, let us know. Otherwise, answer the ten questions identified in the document, and we'll see what's happening.

Thanks!
Amy :)

Hi and thanks for sending the document for review.  I am posting the answers to the 10 questions below:

1. The specific error message or problem;
    The links in the left hand menus on the main page and all sub pages work fine when clicked.  The links in the document body, such as read more, popular, and latest news, go to either a 404 error page, a blank internal page, or reload the referencing page, depending on which SEF settings are activated.

2. A link to your site, if possible;
    http://www.illumiknight.com

3. Steps to recreate the error, if possible.
    I don't know how to recreate this error on another system.  It is blatant on my server as you can see by visiting the home page and clicking on any of the read more, popular, or latest news links.

4. Your system information: including Apache, PHP, and MySQL versions;
    Apache/2.0.54 (Fedora)
    PHP Version 5.0.4
    MySQL - 4.1.20

5. Confirmation that your system meets Joomla!'s minimum requirements;
    Yes, as far as I can tell according to documentation, my system meets the requirements.

6. The version of Joomla! you are using and verification you have updated to
final (if available) or the latest nightly;
    I have installed the latest nightly build.

7. The specific SEF URL options you selected of the three available;
    Currently SEF URLs and Apache Mod ReWrite, although I have tested the setup with every combination of these settings without any change in the errors that I receive when clicking on the internal links.

8. Confirmation your .htaccess file is correctly named and located at the root
of your website;
    The htaccess file is named correctly and is in the root of the site.

9. Results from testing your .htaccess for redirect to Google (Before posting,
read the next section for help if mod_rewrite is not working.);
    redirect sent me to the google site.

10.Confirmation that RewriteBase was not needed or did not work.
    rewrite base is not needed, although I tested the site with the rewrite base and it did not change functionality or errors.

Thank you for all of the help!

I was afraid of this. Earlier, you indicated PHP 5.0.5, which is why it was difficult to help you, right away.

Unfortunately, PHP 5.0.4 is listed on the minimum system requirements as not supported:
Do not use PHP 4.3.9, PHP 4.4.2 or PHP 5.0.4; these releases have known bugs that will interfere with the installation of Joomla! There was also an issue with the Zend Optimizer Version 2.5.10 for PHP 4.4.x. You should ask your host to upgrade to a later release as soon as possible where applicable.
Hopefully, you will be able to upgrade to a version of PHP that works with Joomla!. I will also add that PHP, itself, recommends using PHP 5.2, or above, since PHP 4 has now "expired" as of December 31, 2007.

I am sorry the news wasn't better. I appreciate you taking time to articulate the answers to these questions.

Amy :)
