[SOLVED] SVN:9904 - SEF issues

Post by 3wP » Sun Jan 06, 2008 7:33 am

Hi

I have started my testing of the SEF area on this important svn release.

One of my test contains enabling SEF after i have created some uncategorized content, and then using links in the content - generated from the system before SEF is enabled i.e like the following examples:

index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=39 (generated from link after viewing the page from a created menu item = i want to use this as it follows the item id's as it would by using the main menu)

index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19 (generated from link displayed in the menu item created = don't want to use it as it displays a different menu item id "track" ehhh... aka doesen't highlight the main menu as i wish )

Of course, all of this works when SEF is disabled. BUT, when i enable SEF url's - the following happens:

index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=39
The above link will give this result as a page: http://3wpoker.com/19?task=view

index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19
The above link will give a 404 Error page: http://3wpoker.com/toolsntips/19?task=view

This one gives no troubles of course: http://3wpoker.com/toolsntips/3wpoker-recommends

This means i will have to only use links in my content that is genererated from pages viewed after i have published them and the link is visible by previewing it and/or etc...with SEF enabled

Is this as it's ment to be - or? Cause it could create a mess if one activated a site with SEF after creating a lot of links inside the content that are not given "SEF url's"

Check out the stuff right here if ya want. Check out the 3wPoker Recommends image with links + etc....SEF is now on..

UPDATE: This issue seem to be related to uncategorized content in at least some way. On my frontpage, i have no troubles with links like the following (in the "module slider at the bottom - with 4 modules showing):

index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2&Itemid=10
--> gives this page: http://3wpoker.com/toolsntips/poker-odds-calculator/2

index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2

--> gives this page: http://3wpoker.com/component/content/article/2

The above links depends on where the user fetches them from of course....

Anyway, i got a lot of links in some unpublished content that i will test further with - but any is free to browse around in my demo site to see how the SEF currently works when it tries to fetch links from "content links".

Can you check whether being a direct menu item makes a difference? Because for me menu items are not translating correctly, but other items are.

This is a direct menu item: (if i get u right = link showing after creating a menu item in the admin area )
--------------------------------------------
index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7

- gives this link result from a content link on a page created as static content --> http://3wpoker.com/toolsntips/7

-while the menu (where i fetched the link from) gives this page/link -> http://3wpoker.com/toolsntips ((toolsntips link in my menu)

and the last example is corect link of course - though being the exact same link as the first (index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7).

And if i for example create a link in the content like this:
http:3wpoker.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7

I really get into troubles as it generates the following:
http://3wpoker.com/3wpoker.com/3wpoker. ... ticle&id=7

So for me it's no problems with direct menu items, neither on aliases - but on links in content..

But, i have just gotten started with testing again, and will do some more testing during the upcoming hours..

Defenitely some issues with this..

No, I'm asking if your links in content correspond to menu links that actually exist or if it is links to 'pages' that are not ever directly accessed  via menus.

http:3wpoker.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7 will get you in trouble because of the missing // but also you should just consider doing the relative link, starting with index.php.

Hi mcsmom

got my internetconection messed up last night so i really got in troubles with my testing on the live site. I'm back on this now.

Oki, i see that we missunderstand each other a bit here:

this IS a menu link wich got a page available if browsing the menu:  index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7

and directing to a actuall page - in fact all those internal links got a page to go to that also are directly available via the menus:
index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7  ---> (toolsntips link in my menu)

And i now see that i missed my slashes in the: http:3wpoker.com/index.php?...... sorry bout that 1
i will always use relative links of course - it is tested cause i believe some unexperienced users might use the full links... ;)

NOW i really got to get on with my scheduled testing again lol...

From my testing, if the links are to an item that has a menu link, they do not work.
If they are to an item without a menu link, they work.

Re: SVN:9904 - SEF issues

Post by 3wP » Mon Jan 07, 2008 2:15 pm

Starting all over again = i got confused a bit my self after a quite various amount of different results lol

PAGE 1
---------------------------------------------------
Name: Tools'NTips
Description: Uncategorized article used as frontpage for this category:
Link = Articles » Article: index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7

Clicking the above link in the main menu of the site with SEF on -->> http://3wpoker.com/toolsntips

Now if you go to the above page by using the link, you will find an image on the left with this heading besides it: 3wPoker Recommends

There i have set up a few links as a test. Try to click the links and check the various results.

As you will see, if i click the exact same link in the content as it is generated by the menu link = it gives different url rendering:

i.e: http://3wpoker.com/toolsntips/7?task=view -->> is generated if provided this link inside the content: index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7

PAGE 2
-------------------------------------------------------
Name: 3wPoker Recommends
Description: A category blog layout:
Link = Articles » Category / Blog: index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=17

Clicking the above link in the main menu of the site with SEF on -->> http://3wpoker.com/toolsntips/3wpoker-recommends

Use my example page above and do as explained earlyer = test the links on the left

As you will see, if i click the exact same link in the content as it is generated by the menu link = it gives an "500 - Layout "blog" not found" error:

i.e: http://3wpoker.com/toolsntips/17?layout=blog -->> is generated if provided this link insede the content: index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=17

PAGE 3
-------------------------------------------------------
Name: Test Article
Description: Uncategorized article used to display a page without a menu link:
Link = Articles » Article: index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=19

Clicking the above link with SEF on -->> http://3wpoker.com/toolsntips/19

This page is uncategorized content (no section/category asigned to it) but it highlights the Tools'N'Tips menu  wich it shouldn't have donne --or?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So i have no problems rendering Page 1 in any of the links used for it = This is uncategorized content

Page 2 gives a 500 error = This is category blog layout and gives me error if i use this link in the content - not via the menu

Page 3 is neither a problem = Uncategorized content and has no menu link and gives no error

So in a way i have the same problem as you mcsmom - only diff is that Page 1 has a link in the content and a link in the menu and they both work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- all of this is if i use links generated by the menus
- if i then try to use links generated from a page viewed online (sef disabled) = sometimes i find my self not going to the menu admin area and fetch the link - but open the site i want to link to, and use the generated link in the browser - sometimes that is convenient -->> ex:com_content&task=view&id=24&Itemid=43"

I get some other errors - but i gotta set up some more tests in that area to get it all right lol..

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My be messy my explanations here - but darn - not a easy section this :)

If you go to the tracker item InfoGraf linked, on the files tab there is a patch. Please try applying it and let us know if it works.

Hi

As stated by others on the g.doc - i have no trouble either using article embedded links right now... BUT

This is only if i fetch links from viewing pages online (before sef is enabled) for then to test if the embedded links work.

If i now activate sef and go to lets say my menu manager in order to fetch the link and use that instead of a sef url (so links wont brake if sef goes/is shut down) = i get problems

I have set up a demo page with some links that demonstates this right here

The links in the menu manager dont ad the last &Itemid part i guess,, and that causes the problem:

Link from viewed online:
index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=1&Itemid=3

Same link fetched from where the link is displayed in the menu manager:
index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=1

Check out my test article page to see stuff better.

Besides that - things are better than before now

No, this is not a bug. The link displayed in the menu manager is not intended for use as a URL.  We should use the SEF URL with our links if we activate SEF URLs. If we really want the parameterized URL, we only need to add the Itemid, which can be obtained after it is created when the menu item is created.

Let's not forget, the overall goal is a permanent, pretty URL - never changing - not for a million years!  ;)  Changing URLs is a big deal. Social bookmarking, emailed links, Digg, let alone problems caused with Google, and the need to add a set of permanent 403 redirects in an .htaccess file if the URLs change.

I think we're good on this issue. Bug smashed. As it should be.  ;)

Amy :)

Ok then :)

Agree with you on the link/google  etc part of course...

I just tested it that way cause i had made some links like this before - but i totaly agree on that everything works fine compared to before the patch...

We for shure have tested it propperly now then i hope :)

Donne

I am just glad to help Amy..

Been testing a lot of other stuff with my current release - but i must say that this is really promising in terms of stable - never been so stable in all sections from my point of view :) (know about the sef in terms of weblinks etc but,,,)

Let it blossom :)

Over and out -----
