[solved] reimplement backend module position option

Post by kauselot » Sun Jul 20, 2008 11:53 pm

Because of the way Joomla is used in practice, there are numerous occasions when there is a need for module positions that will not show directly in template. Just two examples:
- position to load module in content. Of course one must use a position that is not used in template
- Modules loaded in modules (e.g. accordion module) - again one must use a position that is not used in template

Module positions in xml are ok, but an option for user to add module positions in backend was much more user friendly. Majority of users don't even know what xml is!

So I would propose reimplementation of backend module positions administration in a way that this backend created positions would be added to xml defined ones.

User friendliness should always be first and way before what is simpler to implement.

Moved to Joomla! Q&T, I think it's better on its place there.

To create a new module position, that is not assigned to a specific location in the html simply type the name in the position field and save.

This is such a clever feature. I recall Andrew's presentation at the Sydney JoomlaDay when he demonstrated this. So many people were unaware of this feature, as well as the split menu technique: http://theartofjoomla.com/magazine/arti ... nique.html

Other resources were posted here: http://sydney.joomladay.org.au/ It was a great day BTW :)

Thank you for this - I searched the forum and all I dug up (even from core members) was, that position needs to be added to xml.
