Viewing Joomla! Offline

Post by mfoster » Tue Oct 24, 2006 2:57 pm

I am new to Joomla! and I was wondering how updating the site works.  On my current CMS, there is a test site where I can see all of my updates before I actually publish them to the web.  Does Joomla! have a test site? If not, is there a way to view my updates before publishing them?

At the moment, you have to update on the live Joomla! install, there is no staging area which you can use before going live. There will be a fat Java client for desktops. There is a "Preview" button available, and when you leave the content item unpublished, it will not be published.

I noticed that there was an off-line option...Do you have to take your site offline to update it or can can changes be made and then update them to your live site?  If you are updating content do you have to take what you have already off-line or can you update it and just refresh online what you already had?

The offline function is for your whole site, and is normally not needed. You can update content/add menus/even install components (though I normally advise to test these on a testsite first) when the site is running. no problem at all. It will get published when you want, by setting the 'publish' and/or 'frontend' option.
