For the secure part, this topic will show you what to put in your .htaccess file to make your site a bit more secure. [http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,75376.0.html]
Every bit counts. :D
You said is "should be fine"... for me, something is awry... whenever I turn on the built in SEO, my site breaks.. Since it has worked I have:
1. Upgraded to 1.0.10
2. Added the extra security (your link above) in .htaccess (but even when I take it all out, I still have the problem...)

I am seeing a ton of posts on here about the built in SEO breaking in 1.0.10...
In any case, I have done some extensive testing... I am documenting it here because I think it might benefit others:

I just DOWNLOADED the full package.. unzipped it and used that htaccess... well.. NOW it works.

What are the differences between my htaccess and the one from the Joomla download?
The one from the Joomla Download:
"Options FollowSymLinks" was NOT commented out.
"RewriteEngine On" was NOT commented out.
"RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^(/component/option,com) [NC,OR]" WAS commented out.

Once I corrected these in MY .htaccess file, SEO works.

FYI: my original .htaccess file came from Fantastico...
Thanks!
Aaron

OOOH my very first post.

OK so here it goes. I've been using Joomla for about a week and there is a ton to learn, but take my advice read everything before you go posting. Chances are the answer is already there.

Whenever I changed the SEF feature using the Global Configuration>SEO>Search Engine Friendly URLs: I would get a 404 error on every page so it was back to the old way and more reading. I was stumped! I used the forum search for: broken links - links not working - nothing works - 404 error

I used the troubleshooting tips in the FAQ, but to delete an entire page of code when you don't know what in heck you are doing is not an option to a script kiddie like myself. However, there was good news! The .htacces file itself gives you (me at least) the answer. Mine had a detailed explanation what I needed to do. But just in case yours does not;

You need to download the file and open with something like dreamweaver. find the line:

Code: Select all

#Options FollowSymLinks
and insert another # in front of the other

Upload it replacing the old>turn on Search Engine Friendly URLs and KABLAMO it worked like a charm

Anyway thought I'd put in my nickel to try an help out
My mother always said there were no stupid questions, only really stupid people – It took me a long time to figure out she was talking about me.

Newbie with Joomla, etc., here.
Why do we want SEO friendly URLs?
I've found my old site crawling with bots and get hundreds of spams in email accounts that should not be available to these predatory bots.

I used all the meta words to prevent them from crawling thru my links, but they got them anyway. And I think some of them got in and hacked away. Found many of my pages with tons of garbage/garbel inserted, not by me. I don't want them crawling thru my new site. And they are already trying, tho I haven't advertised this site, posted it anywhere or linked it to any other yet.

Can't Google get enough info from keywords, page titles, and content, to give you good position on searches?

Besides, I started with Joomla because I was tired of all the extra work trying to make other programs work. this SEO problem just made it harder. Code this, code that. and then you end up with broken links.

So again, why do we need SEO friendly links, if it only leads to thousands of SPAMs?

Hey everyone,

I searched but could find no answer.

I have apache installed on fedora 6 with mod_rewrite on, and seo enabled.  .htaccess is in the joomla directory and allowoverride is set to all.
Still getting 404's when i try to click any links on my page.  I have tested mod_rewrite and it does work, just not with sef.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I still wonder why we need this "SEO friendly urls..."

So I tried the routines advised. found an empty .htaccess file in my directory, so I turned the SEO on, links broke...Turned it back off, links still did not work, trashed the blank .httaccess file and then the links worked.

Read some more of your multi, confusing posts and tutorials. So decided to try it again.

finally found the httaccess.txt file, turned it into .httaccess file, and my links broke!

Now I did not turn the SEO on! But immediately emptied that .httaccess file. The links still did not work. Went exploring and found the SEO was turned ON! not by me. So turned it off.

And the links worked....

Now, I'm not one to belabor fortune, but I think the message, for me anyway, is that I do not really want SEO friendly URLs.
After all, why make it easy for them to reap links and email addresses?

TRUTHINESS? Many of the repeating SPAMS I get started from gmail addresses. Now the same old Spams are coming from such bogus addresses they got to be made up. probably from the same people.

So frankly, I'm glad I can't use it. I think I can get better ranking without SEO-Friendly-links. and hopefully less time-wasting Spam.

Hi Jypsy, I'm sorry you have had spam from your site but I have never heard of SEF making it easier for crawlers and bots to send you emails. If there was an extension installed that had a security hole then it would be easy for someone to get access to your site and make changes that you did not want. Make sure your Joomla install is updated to the latest in the 1.0.x build and check the security forums for possible extensions you have that are known to have security problems.

Hi!

I would like to arrange SEF urls on my new & shiny joomla 1.5.

I am trying to make sure that my mod_rewrite is enabled, in accordance with this instruction:
2) You must have mod_rewrite enabled
To check this go to administration > System > System Info. Click on PHP Information tab. Scroll down until you find Loaded Modules row. mod_rewrite should be listed here. If it's not ask your web host to activate mod_rewrite.
So, I went to system info and cannot find any info about mod_rewrite... I was going to right my web host about it but I went first to check how the system info looks on a 1.0.11 website of mine that has SEF working fine. But also there I can't find any info about mod_rewrite on the system info section... maybe I am not looking at the right place?

I would love is someone could give me a tip here!

Cheers!

Just upload it anywhere to your server and access the file in a browser, and it will tell you anything that's installed

I cannot get the natural Joomla SEO working either. When I turn it on, I get forbidden errors when I click my links

Step 1 Apache, check
Step 2, mod_rewrite, host says its on by default, although I dont see it in system info or when I run the handy script above http://www.addmybuddies.com/phpinfo.php
Step 3, Your server must allow .htaccess override
When I try to even access this file, I get the following error:
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /.htaccess on this server.
You may need to create an index.html page or enable the directory browsing by creating an .htaccess file containing "Options +Indexes"."

I am sure that this is a problem, but not sure how to fix it.  I have full access to my hosting space.

Any suggestions are helpful.

what should the content of the .htaccess file be?  Mine is empty and when I turn on SEO, the links break.

In your joomla installation, there should be a htaccess.txt file with some different directives in it.  Rename it to .htaccess and all should be well.  If not, here is what's in the .htaccess file

thanks, that was the content missing from my file.  Joomla SEO works well now.

FYI, to anyone else.  My Joomla was installed using Fantastico/CPanel on Apache.  My install never had a htaccess.txt file and my .htaccess file was always empty.  If you are in this situation, you may also find the solution above helpful.

Hello,

I really appreciate Artio JoomSef.. I've tested it in a site with only Basic Joomla installed. and I am satisfied with its user friendly interface. :)

I have a question though, I don't know if Artio SEF is compatible with all these below installed?
1) J 1.0.11
2) CB 1.0.2 and some plugins
3) SMF 1.1.1
4) Ortsios J-SMF-CB Bridge 1.1.6
5) Sobi Business Directory
6) Simple Image - Joomlaworks
7) JCE Editor
8) Jobline
9) and some other mods installed

Thanks.

PS. I need to have this .htaccess below to make my SMF work with Joomla when SEO is turned on

I am having the same problem as a few it just will not work for my site, I have all the boxes ticked so to say I even copied the htaccess code below and dropped it in my own.
As soon as I turn SEF on every link goes. Did anyone ever find a solution beyond the new htaccess code?

Thanks

Are you using joomla 1.5? Another version? I can send you my htaccess file, if that helps. Maybe that would help.
Who is your host? Mine is GoDaddy and I had to to special modification (AddHandler or something like this, I am a newbie) to make it work. Cheers.

I'm not sure you need rewrite for SEF under 1.5....

$mosConfig_sef= "1" in configuration.php

I was moving along reasonably well in trying to figure out why SEO isn't working for me... until I had a problem with the FAQ and followed the link to this hodge-podge of problems & resolutions. This isn't a flame or anything, just where I'm at right now as a newb. Specific solutions are great, but I was looking to understand SEO, SEF a little, like the FAQ started out as.

First item- Can someone add "SEO" to the "SEF" FAQ so a search on SEO FAQ finds it? SEO is what it's called on the Joomla tab, btw.

Second item- Following the FAQ, I get to Troubleshooting 2) and can't find anything in the System Info, PHP Info page that looks like the "Loaded Modules row", or any reference to mod_rewrite. But, I think (don't know for sure) that my host has it enabled because I can redirect by editing the htaccess files.

Third and last item- I suspect that I have path/location issues but I don't want to muck up this topic and make it any more specific/useless as a follow-up to the step-by-step FAQ then it already is, so I'm going to post it elsewhere.

My final thoughts.... update the FAQ to make it match the features/terminology of 1.0.12 +, and maybe add a bit of clarification about what some of the htaccess entries are/do/should be (like RewriteBase, RewriteRule, and RewriteCond) for us newb/idiots ??
