Post by adamsouthward » Sun Feb 05, 2006 1:56 pm

Hi there,

Thanks for the excellent guide. I'm looking to implement this myself, but cannot seem to locate the mod_kl_evalphp module or the kl_php mambot anywhere!! Can you point me in the right direction please?

Cheers.

module-version is missing in Ken's modified overview........ Be advised to add to this overview the  mod_kl_php should be mentioned:: place php-script into a module
it is a module with a parameter-window allowing you to add external php-code into a module........
the Mambo-link for this mod:: http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthread ... kl_evalphp

good to see that the download-files have been restored.....

Thanks for the how to! I had a question on the following:

2. Create a banner invocation code in phpAdsNew (PHP!!! and not Javascript or text or whatsoever: this comes below) and remove the php-tags till it is shown

Where do you select the PHP option?

Under the Invocation Tab, I only see the following in the dropdown:
Remote Invocation
Remote Invocation for Javascript (which you said not to use)
Remote Invocation for Frames
Remote Invocation using XML-RPC

When I select Remote Invocation and click on generate, it generates the following:

Any help will be appreciated!!

2 points:

manual page 94
If the ad server is located on the same server as your website, you can use local mode
for as the invocation type. There is one very big requirement for local mode: it can only
be used in PHP files (or other file types which are parsed by PHP). If phpAdsNew is
installed on a different server, or you don’t use PHP for your website you are forced to
use a form of remote invocation.

Direct selection

Use Direct selection to create the local code page 76 manual describes this flawless

This should be sufficient for you to carry on. Digest the information in the manual (user manual!) and you will do just fine

oh..... I was actually looking in the Admin Manual before. I have one more questions ;)

Admin Manual Page 8
Running phpAdsNew on a dedicated server
If you want to install phpAdsNew on a dedicated server, you can’t use local mode invoca-
tion, but all the other types of remote invocation will still work fine.

Are they referring to running the site and phpAdsNew on the same dedicated server? If so, why wouldn't it work since they are on the same server using one domain?

Thanks again!

before page 8 comes normally page 7  8)  and you made me read again......  :o

In general to your question...matter of manual writing (despite this one being quite good i must admit!) so normal people as you and i can understand what they mean. You are completely right and its a no issue...it works as long as they are on the same server. dedicated or not is not an issue. SAME SERVER IS! What they try to describe is webaplication on webserver (shared) and phpadsnew on a dedicated or another =same.

Running your website and phpAdsNew on one web server
This is probably the simplest way to deploy phpAdsNew and unless you have a very large
number of visitors this will work very good. You can install phpAdsNew in a subdirectory
on the same virtual host as your actual website. If you website is also build with PHP you
can use local mode invocation to deliver the banners.
If you are using local mode invocation there are some things you might want to consider.
Because phpAdsNew needs to set cookies for certain advanced features the domain name
which phpAdsNew uses must be the same as the one you are using for your website. The
reason for this is because only cookies set by domain name X will be readable by a script
running on domain name X. If you are using more than one domain name phpAdsNew
will work without any problems, it will simply set the cookie using the domain name
which is currently used, but this will only work if all the domain names you are using
point to the same virtual host.
If you do want to run phpAdsNew on a different virtual host with a separate domain
name you can’t use local mode invocation without causing problems. Other types of
remote invocation will work fine. This approach also has a couple of advantages: because
there is a limitation to the number of cookies you can set for a specific domain older
cookies will be deleted when new cookies are set. If you are running phpAdsNew on the
same domain as your website it is possible phpAdsNew will delete the cookies which are
set by your own website. Running on a different domain name will prevent this.

Running phpAdsNew on a dedicated server
If you want to install phpAdsNew on a dedicated server, you can’t use local mode invocation,
but all the other types of remote invocation will still work fine. Apart from the obvious
speed improvements this has some other advantages. Because the ad server needs
to run on a separate domain name the cookies set by phpAdsNew are kept separate from
the cookies set by your website. This also means they don’t share the same limitation in
the number of cookies that can be set, so phpAdsNew won’t delete cookies set by your
website once the limit is reached.

answer is in the cookie setting and limitations:  older cookies will not be deleted when new cookies are set and that casues havoc...Read the two sections and you should understand......

Once again where possible avoid Javascript invocation....we see more and more companies and browsers being set to NOT accept javascript at all out of security concerns. This is especially a trauma in html-emails.....90% we see blocked if not correctly set.....

hope this helps. If you need additional help visit our site  ;)

Hi all!!!
So I  am a bit confused. The "Guide to Integrate PHP makes reference to a couple of modules by John Long. However while recently looking at http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/ this shows a PhpAdnews Module. Otherwise, I havent heard much more about how it actually works. Anyone know anything about this module? And how it relates to the 2 modules the guide references? Do I need 3 modules?

Ive installed the PHPAdsNew, and it looks great. Ive only played with it a little bit.

Has anyone integrated this successfully? Anyone have a site up so I can have a gander?

Thanks for the feedback.

In fact I would like to ask too about difference between standard PhpAdnews Module and way described in this tutorial? What are advantages/disadvantages of both solutions?

phpAdsNew and Joomla

Post by thejungle » Fri May 19, 2006 9:30 am

Hi!

I've just installed Joomla this week but have been running phpAdsNew for a while with 2000+ banners added.

I have shared hosting for all my domains, so all my domains are on the same server, just differnt paths.

/username/www.site1.com/
/username/www.site2.com/    etc

so http://www.site1.com is really /username/www,site1/com/index.htm

phpAdsNew is installed and running on /username/www.site1.com/ (http://www.site1.com) and Joomla on /username/www.site2.com/ (http://www.site2.com)

I've installed kl_php and mod_kl_evalphp and installed them.

I've copied mod_kl_evalphp and inserted the banner code into the PHP-script section eg:

if (@include('/username/www.site1.com/admanager/phpadsnew.inc.php')) {
        if (!isset($phpAds_context)) $phpAds_context = array();
        $phpAds_raw = view_raw ('', 74, '', '', '0', $phpAds_context);
        echo $phpAds_raw['html'];

- The ad doesn't show up but the `alt-text' for the banner does, so it's a blank space and the `Click here for more info' associated text with the banner in phpads shows up. If I click the link it attempts to go to the link but rather than:

`http://www.site1.com/admanager/adclick. ... ce=&dest=h....' (where phpads is located) it tries to load the page: `http://www.site2.com/admanager/adclick. ... ce=&dest=h....' which doesn't exist.

(I thought since both sites were on the same server it may redirect correctly)

Is there an easy way to correct this or change the coding to make it click to http://www.site1.com and show the correct image, or do I need to install phpads on the same site as my Joomla install.

Sorry if the answers obvious, I did search etc before I asked

Thanks
Ernie

i had unsubscribed coincidentally to this thread. Sorry for that...better late than never  :-[

see attached the two files needed........... :)

..........the guide describes how to do it without module the module_phpAdsNew...One of the resons amogst many others is the fact that this module does not support flash-ads....I hardly see anything else with our customers these days.....

The module which you download here is not phpmyadsnew...it is a module that allows you to insert the invocation code generated with phpmyadsnew inside a module....You can insert multiple invocation codes in one module....or use 1 module for 1 ad and copy it

Cheers and hope it helps

no worry my friend...........sorry for not coming back earlier.reasons quoted above......You have pinpointed exactly the reason why it does not show up. You use php-invocation code which is perfect but that only works as both systems are on the same server....

Thanks for the article.
I've done everything and almost everything went well.
Set up advertiser, banners, publishers, zone, invocation code, ect....
The banner is showing nicely.
But when I click on the banner i got a 403 forbidden page error

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /adserver/adclick.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Any thoughts?
Thanks again.

Sounds like a .htaccess problem. I recently ran into the same problem although it was not related to a phpAdsNew issue. However, once I updated my htaccess file everything was working properly again. Check your file to see if you can dig something up.

I am using Joomla core SEF with joomla's .htaccess
My server is running php5 and mysql5. Could that be the cause of the problem?
Strange though, coz in PAN's support forum no one complains about php5 or mysql5.

I don't think it'll have anything to do with MYSQL and PHP 5 (but I have been wrong before). :D  Do you have another site running using Joomla? If you do, take a look at that site's .htaccess and see if anything differs from the one that's giving you problems. I wish I could be more helpful but hopefully this'll get the ball rolling.

In my .htaccess I only have Option FollowSymlink commented out.
Even if I have another Joomla site, I doubt that the .htaccess is going to be different except for that one.

OK, I got the module and the mambot installed, so far so good. However, the next step is worrying me.

I got the invocation code and added the {kl_php} tags. Then the next thing says...
. Create a banner invocation code in phpAdsNew (PHP!!! and not Javascript or text or whatsoever: this comes below) and place this code on the place where you want the banner to show up in your Content
I have several zones in my phpadsnew, based on ad size. The first one I did following these directives I entitled 'banner_468x60' and it worked fine. Then I copied this module, changed the name of the copy to 'banner_180x15', put in the appropriate invocation code from phpadsnews and put it into position.
This one shows up in the right place but has the error message "Parse error: parse error, unexpected '}' in /home/thenewbr/public_html/modules/mod_kl_evalphp.php(27) : eval()'d code on line 1".

I am not a programming person so perhaps this error message is spelling out the problem for me and I just don't know enough to decipher it. I redid the invocation code and repasted it into the module but nothing seems to work. I don't even have a clue of how next to proceed so your kind help is requested.

OK I guess I am kind of answering my own question here so I hope this can help someone else.

The reason for the error seems to be that I was including the {kl_php} tags in the individual banner modules I had created for each ad size/zone. When I took these out, it worked fine.

Thanks... However, I don't think the FAQ/Help file for this is as clear as it could be for real newbies such as myself. It may be simple to those who have vast programming and coding experience but some people need more of a helping hand. Here are several suggestions:

1)
Copy this module and rename the copy to Advert no1. (or equivalent)
Before this, you must leave the Install Module area and go to Modules > Site Modules to make the copy.

2) Include links to the module and mambot.

3)
So this is how you place the ad, generated with invocation code of phpAdsNew in the content of Joomla/Mambo and you now have a fully integrated content ad visible with full functionality in phpAdsNew! You see how easy it is? The code is generated by phpAdsNew and you only have to paste it into the right position with some minor adjustments!
Uh, this does not actually seem easy at all at first glance. It sounds like I am supposed to hard code this into the template, which of course is ridiculous. What it should say is that now you can choose the Position of the new Module you just created and insert into your site as any other Module. Then it should say that for each different zones and ad size a new Module is needed, and then give simple directions on how to copy the original module, update the invocation code and place the Module in the site.

My five cents...

that was described very clearly that it does not like the php-tags! :)

if you do not read it would not even sound that you should put code in a template...where did you get that impresion. If you do not read you might get the impression that you have to put an "include-statement" into the content (which is the function of the bot by the way............) and is definitely not ridiculous but very elagant and functions just like inserting javascript into content.....YOU MUST READ and try to understand before making harsh statements.
What it should say is that now you can choose the Position of the new Module you just created and insert into your site as any other Module. Then it should say that for each different zones and ad size a new Module is needed, and then give simple directions on how to copy the original module, update the invocation code and place the Module in the site.
IT SHOULD NOT!

it states very clearly and therefore once again READ!:
Goto Joomla > admin > modules > Advert no1 and insert the invocation code where parameter states "PHP-script" ,define the position where the module should show, the pages etc, and save.
This statement is NOT related to inserting the module into the content with modulepositions but related to the handling within the module itself.  SO once again READ......and please redo your post becasue this only confuses others!

2ct's are always welcome but be aware that the post reflects the issue at hand and do not mix up the things.  Placing code into content (and not template) is definitely not "ridiculous" and common practice....

cheers

Well excuse me!

I am a new user and I happen to be of the opinion that the Help was not in fact as clear as you thought it might be. If you wrote it, then keep in mind that everyone is not a super-duper PHP Joomla coding expert like you and in fact YOU DO need to break things down a bit. I could read it over and over but if it is not clear then it is not clear.

You should be grateful for the input of a complete newbie, and not try to make it seem as if I was putting down your Help article. Instead, maybe you should re-read your own writing and try to make it clearer to people who might not know as much as you.

ANYWAY, I got it to work as I said, but I left the post with my original question in case anyone else had the same problem figuring out what to do, they would find the problem and solution as I did. I think my suggestions are fair and I don't think they were presented in an antagonistic manner.

Back to work...

You misread the issue, it is as simple as that. However i am always open for suggestions and to make the point clear (amongst others that you misread) and to avoid these discussions i have uploaded an image right below the sentense you say is not clear. Next i do not bite on your remarks but i do consider them provocative. Having said so I am definitely not a super-duper php coding expert though i wish sometimes i was.... 8) We try to help people like you and enjoy doing so. We all learn. I learn on daily basis as well. The by you mentioned moduleposition description has little to do with the specific issue of the article. Your evaluation on how to place the module into an article with {mosloadposition} itself is correct and could be an addendum to the article itself.....but than as a replacement of the mambot which allows for inserting php-code into the content. The point with that though if you have 600 adverts as an example and you have only 50 modulepositions available and you need many, many more how would you handle all those modules? See the logic of using php-code in content?

cheers

Re: DISCUSSION: How to use phpAdsNew with Joomla!

Hi,

I've just got phpadsnew up and running, thanks in part, to the wonderful guide which has been discussed here.  This is only my second day using phapads - which is excellent, although a bit frightening for a newbie like me.

Anyway, I've got everything set up and I have a banner being delivered by my new adserver.  Great! Almost, you see the banner is not displaying correctly.  For some reason there is a lot of white space beneath it.  The width and height of the banner are set correctly in phpadsnew, so I'm not sure what I've not set up correctly.  You can see what I mean here: http://www.englishisin.com/

I've looked at the comprehensive phpadsnew documentation, but can't find anything.

Any tips or suggestions would be welcomed.

Many thanks,

Alex

Sussed it!

It was the .css in the solarflare template:

This is the mod which got me back on track:

/** height changed to 10px from 70px **/

#banner_inner {
float: left;
padding: 0px;
height: 10px;
}

But it makes no difference to the display in IE6 :'( even with important added to the height. >:(

Partially solved - I removed the poweredby_inner div from the template html and commented out the poweredby_inner .css rules.  Now the adds display OK in both IE and Firefox.

I think my workaround is not the best in the world, but it seems to have got the job done.

Hi

I successfully installed phpads new and this  "KL_evalPHP" module.

I also successfully inserted the php code without the php tags into the required field as described in the guide. My sites are on tghe same server as my phpadsnew installation (my own dedicated server). I use the newest version of phpadsnew.

But strangly, the banner is sometimes appearing and sometimes not. If I click on the navigation bar (suckerfish), on some menues it shows,  on others not. Wrapper seem never to work, but alos homepage sometimes not. There is also a difference whether I use IE 6 or Firefox (always newest version)

I have in phpadsnew-settings this banner for 100% of the time. No other banner shall replace it. neither shall the banner disappear after x-views or to the same user.

I use Joomla 1.010, SEO turned on PLUS open SEF enabled. Could that has something to do with it? Formerly I used the phpadsnew module for Joomla, but this is now unpublished in Admin CP.

Any ideas what is resulting this unlogical behaviour? Any specific changes I have to make within the  KL_evalPHP module so that it can work all the time?

Thanks in advance

Bumoung this topic because the developper should be subsribed to it, and might be able to help me out.

I got this installed and working flawlessly, only one thing isn't working like I would like it...

I have a phpbb forum wrapped and bridged inside my Joomlasite, and the banner does show up in the header where I placed it, only, I would like it to refresh it to another banner when people go to another page on the forum... the forum is rather big and I'm mostly paid per view, and would need that to cover the operation costs of the forum/site... :)
