I added a "special" privileges link ABOVE the top item on the main menu. At that point, I began getting that error on the default index.php page. Once I moved that special link BELOW the "home" menu item, everything returned to normal.

In my opinion, that's a pretty dangerous option, especially since other admins (you know, the CLIENTS that are probably using our installs) might do the same thing. Joomla should have an option to set an item as the home page, rather than relying on the menu to decide the home page.

I have this problem with joomla 1.0.8.
I won to organize news so that they are listed in a blog category view with public access, and in separate menu listed in a table view with special access. The secnod thing I need for allowing only authors to see tabelar view of news for a quicker access in need of change.
And I can't achieve this for I have  "You are not authorized to view this resource. You need to login" from anywhere I'm accessing content item details.
I really hope this will change for it is not logical to work like this.

Well mine is a bit different...
The site was just down while I switched from mambo to joomla, and after I managed to fix most of the bugs and get everything running right again, I noticed that when I logged in, it didn't display me on the logged in list.  When I went to the registered member only areas, it told me I had to log in...
I logged in and out a few times, and it started working again.  But some of the members are having troubles.

Using 1.0.8 and the new version of the SMF Bridge

I had this problem for whatever content I opened I got "You are not authorized to view this resource."

I found the problem, it was related to my computer.
I cleaned all cookies and all cahed files in my PC and that solved the problem for me.

I've just started having this problem, but only with the archive pages.  Permissions of the menu link and all the content are fine, etc, etc.  I've tried it with both a section and a category archive but it just doesn't work.  I've tried this both logged in and logged out and I still get the problem (obviously it doesn't say "You need to login".  I'm running Joomla 1.0.8.  I've got the SMF-bridge for my login in case that makes a difference.

I am still having this problem, but ONLY with 2 static content items on my site.  They are set to be accessible only to registered visitors.  However, a registered visitor gets the "You are not authorized to view this resource."

None of the content items or component items (in other words, anything linked to section/category) seems to have this issue, only the two static content tied to menu items, but not section/content.

??? How to resolve?  Admin views just fine.

UPDATE:  Missed this solution probably because you have to scroll down and the first couple of posts were in German or something: http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic ... #msg298351

I had the problem suddenly after upgrading to 1.08 followed by 1.09. In my case it affected everything in an entire section. Nothing in the solutions post seems to apply.

In my case, the itemids were obviously all messed up. (I could see this by clicking on the items and watching the numbers change in the address bar.)

I had to fix it by creating a brand new Section, all the new Categories to go in it, and a new rebuilt menu. Then I changed all the content items one by one to the new Section/Category.

I still have problem  :(

After clicking "what's more in...(i.e. Latest News?)" I can't read any news, it will say "... not authorized..."; even the pagination at the bottom is not working, either  :(

Anyone have any idea?
Thanks

OKAY...I have thoroughly exhausted what feels like every solution known to the community and STILL registered users under the access level of editor cannot view any static content on my site....including,Welcome, HELP, Privacy Policy, TOS, and the ALL BLOGS page.

It's not trash, date, sef, 'public v regs' settings..(though I don't understand why the limitation of not being able to use static content for registered access only would be considered anything other than a bug).  It's not item id...that is correct from menu link and again, shows up for users with admin privileges...just nothing below that.

The closest I've heard to a new suggestion on this topic that seems to continue to be an issue for many is 'Upgrade to 1.0.9".  I'm on the verge of going live after 3 months of building...3 long, hard months for this newbie who couldn't even install joomla a few long  months ago. (This is now my 3rd site with one being the community portal for a UNESCO World Heritage Site!  :D )  However, I read too many issues around the upgrade and the last thing I can do as I inch towards going live is invite a whole new set of problems.  Would rather wait.  I'm using 1.0.8

So without a solution that applies, does this mean I should simply accept that this is a flaw in Joomla and give up on the concept of having any static content unless it is only intended for the users with admin privileges?  Go back, start over and rebuild items in blog content only for all users without admin access?

Or is this a completely new thread re: static content because I only get the "You are not authorized to view..." and not "You must first login."

After upgrading from 1.04 to 1.09, I started getting "You are not authorized to view this resource."  etc on a "Read More" link when I was not signed in.  Worked great when I was signed in. Sound familiar?

I worked through the entire list of suggestions at: http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,19443.0.html and more, variously turning SEF on and off, clearing cache, removing cookies, changing browsers, copying the offending article and deleting the original, - nothing worked.

Then, I committed a terrible kluge that tides me over the immediate problem, and might give a hint for a fix.

I have SEF turned on, so the "Read More" link pointed to:  http://www.covenantfrazer.org/content/view/68/  but it didn't work.
I hacked a few other content item URLs (../67/  or ../70/) into the address bar and got "You are not authorized" for those, too.

Then I noticed that the URL for a static item was structured the same, but ended in ../8/13/ where 8 is the content ID and 13 is the itemid of the link that points to the static item.

Well heck, I slapped  /13/ on the end of the "Read More" URL and it worked!

For my workaround, I dupicated the original content item in another category, edited the original item back to the introductory text and added a hard link (labeled Read More) pointing to the new content item with /13/ added to the end.  Ugly, with a capital UG, but sufficient for the moment.

So, why would the kluged link work:  http://www.covenantfrazer.org/content/view/88/13/
while the generated link doesn't: http://www.covenantfrazer.org/content/view/88/

Thanks,
Ed

ps - it's still broken in it's original form at http://www.elrod.biz/covenant/

I noted similar problems and a similar solution.

When I use the link button in my content editor (JCE) and select a link to a static item, often the &Itemid=xx is omitted from the end of the url. This results in a the dreated not authorized message.

Adding the Itemid in manually solves the problem, it's just a matter of figuring out the item id.

I got this terrible problem (again) after just upgrading to the lastest, 10.

My comment module link ("Write Comment") links correctly from the main page to the article. But, if you click the linked Title of the article it gives the "not authorized" message, as do "Read More"; and the links from my Latest Posts list give the error too. This has got to be the most annoying Joomla malfunction.  >:(
It almost makes the website unusable. There is one link that still works ("Hurrah for Angola") and I've looked at it and can't figure out why it works and others in the same category/section don't.

Here's my site for the curious:

A much better workaround than the last one ...

Postby emel » Mon Jul 10, 2006 5:01 pm

The "Read More" -> "You are not authorized .." problem went away when I created a "Blog - Content Section" usermenu item for the relevant content section, even though the usermenu never actually appears anywhere on my web site.

To recap, I have a section "FrontPage" with three categories, "FrontPageTop", "News", and "FrontPageBottom".  Static information lives in FrontPageTop and FrontPageBottom while topical, time sensitive news items sit in the middle.   I mark all of the articles to appear on the front page, and they do (no surprise there).  Previously, there was no other link anywhere that pointed to the FrontPage section or any of the categories beneath it.   Articles in FrontPage/News with a "Read More" link generated the infamous "You are not authorized..." message.

But, but, ... articles from other sections/categories with menu links to them worked just fine, even when I marked them to appear on the front page. That led me to experiment with creating an unused menu link to my FrontPage section - and it worked!  Now the "Read More" links on the front page include an itemid for the unused usermenu link (100, in this case).

Thinking about it, this falls under:
Linking to Menus:
1. You must have the content item linked to a menu and the permissions on the menu and menu item must be set to public.  The menu does not have to be published.

from http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic ... 091.  Simply having content appear on the home page apparently does not count as 'linked to a menu."

I hope this helps with some of the other "Read More" problems.

This is all on 1.0.10, btw.

I've been getting this since upgrading from 1.0.7 to 1.0.10.  It actually only gives the message to me WHEN I LOGIN, which makes no sense.  If i try it a second time, it doesn't even popup the message, it just reloads the page.  If i click "home", suddenly the login boxes are replaced by the logged-in box.  Doesn't make any sense.

I think that my problem is different from the ones I have seen here so far, but then again, I am not the brightest star in the sky. My problem is that no matter what kind of item I have on the top in my main menu, it doesnt want to display it on start. (My intention is to use it as the default homepage.) It all worked fine until today! I have no problems accessing anything else than the homepage... Any suggestions? And if it was unclear, i get the same "You are not authorized" as everyone else here...

Are you 100% sure you have "frontpage" checked off from inside the edit mode, or from the menu list it has a green check instead of the red X under "frontpage"?

A screen cap of your menu list would be great...

Well... now it works. Its an ugly solution, but it works. I wont even think of the menues until I am sure I have time to fix it, right now I have to fix all the material on the rest of the site and make sure its up to date. I'll be back here whining in a few weeks or so. Tnx Purogamer for answering my post!

This happens to me under the following conditions:
My configuration.php file is set to http://www.mywebsite.com
I go to mywebsite.com without the preceeding www. and try to login.

It's a cookie problem, I think.

The following topic made it all work for me:

http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic ... cseen.html

I followed the directions, and create a dummy new menu named 'hiddenmenu', and made sure I checked it was not published in the site modules list.
Next in the admin backend I went to: content > section manager.
For each section I did the following:
- clicked the section name
- copied the title towards from the title field towards the 'menu item name' field on the right
- selected the hiddenmenu item
- select the 'section list' from the drop down list options
- finally clicked the 'link to menu button.

Next closed this screen, and did the same for all the sections I had listed.

And now it finally works, I can be logged out from the website, and still click latest news items, or place links to topics on my website which are public on in emails....etc

Hope this helps people out a bit more.....it took me 3 days to find this sollution....
(Thanks stingrey for the sollution!!)

gr. Frank
