Naming extensions rules.

Postby paulsimonrough » Wed Oct 11, 2017 2:58 am

I'm switching over to a new site and I'm about to rebrand some of my extensions and I was looking at the rules and just wanna check a few things:

https://docs.joomla.org/Extensions_name

1.xxxxxx

Donts: Use the author or company name in the extension name (there is a field for that)

What about branding can I use that? the branding is different from my company name.

2.xxxxxx

Donts: Use extension types as part of the extension name

What about for example I have a custom code module? I cant mention it's a module but can I say in the name something like 'custom code into module' ? as in saying what it does... it puts custom code into a module or can I not have the word module anywhere in the name? seems a bit daft.

Thanks.

Hi,

1. Extension Branding: Sure, you can use any branding for your extension names. You can find many examples of extensions from the same developer that add a characteristic naming.

2. No, you can't use words like "module", "plugin", "mod", "component", "package", etc.

If you are creating a module, then it's better to describe the function (since a "module" is an abstract concept). For example, it's better to say that it's a "widget", "gallery", "form", "button", etc.

For number 2 the problem I have is one of my extensions is a simple custom code into module, so how do I describe this without using the word module?

I'm not saying its a module I'm describing what it does.

I cant just call it 'custom code' folk browsing the JED would think custom code what?

But 'custom code into module' is simple and lets them know at a glance what it does.

It seems like a strange restriction that you cant say what the extension actually does.

If you had a customcode into module what you call it on the JED to let folk know what it is?

Thanks.

I'm trying to help you to name your extension.

I'm not here to discuss the rule itself (since it is pointless). All extensions are required to be named following these rules.

I'm a little confused by this I need more clarification.

I was under the impression that you weren't allowed to say in the extension name whether your extension was a plugin, module or component.... example "facebook comments plugin" would be forbidden.

BUT if you are describing what your extension does in the name its ok.

For example, this plugin here creates "fixed vertical module position" https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... -position/

He is not saying its a module (its not its a plugin) but using the word module is ok in this regard because its a description of what it does.

there are 100's of extensions on the JED that use the words module, plugin or component when describing what they do.

Another example is "Component Builder" using the word component here is ok as it describes what it does, he is not stating that its a component (even though it is)
https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... t-builder/

Is this correct?

There are 100's of extension like this, should I report them all via support tickets if they are going against naming rules?

Thanks, Paul.

Hi,

The rules have evolved in the history (10+ years) of Joomla and JED. So, yes, you can find approved extensions (at the beginning of the directory) that don't meet the current requirements.

Just seems like more stupid rules made up for no other reason than to make life difficult for developers and users trying to find things on the already broken JED...
