False positive broken links / Unpublished extension again

Post by eorisis » Thu Jun 01, 2023 3:20 pm

Hello,

I didn’t want to go through the forum but this has happened a second time right after some of my extensions have been previously unpublished. The previous time it was due to the Joomla-JED-LinkChecker bot changing IP without any way for me to get informed about that. I had to wait for a whole month for them to get published again. I changed all firewall rules to allow for the new IP and everything got sorted.

And now ? Now, a couple of weeks later unpublished again. I see no mention of Joomla-JED-LinkChecker or the IP of the server it comes from anywhere as blocked in any way. Not on the CDN, not on iptables, not on Apache logs not on WAF, nowhere. On top of that, I received a notification email from the JED an hour ago and after checking on the JED, the extension is unpublished already.

I do understand and respect everyone’s job as a volunteer in the JED team, as well as any other people’s work. But I should also know how to treat the situation.

Sincerely

The developer of the Joomla-JED-LinkChecker is no more part of the JED team (as far as I know is not even active in Joomla project - he took off for a well deserved sabbatical year). There are some known issues with the bot and they are PLANNED to be fixed. Since there is only one man left in the team who is handling the development tasks in the JED project - and his main focus is to develop the JED4 update, I can't promise a quick resolution for the problem.
You can do 2 things there:
1 - the easier: go there https://github.com/joomla/jed-issues/issues, check if the issue is already listed, "watch" it to know when will be addressed, or post it, if you feel that none of the issues are matching your issue.
2 - the harder one: go there: https://volunteers.joomla.org/, check the open seats in the JED team, apply for one, come on board, and help keep this project alive.
JED volunteers are a species on Red List Category of Critically Endangered (https://www.iucn.org/resources/conserva ... ed-species). Worth checking them until you can still find some... ;)

Hello and I respect your reply.

The issue here is that my extensions get unpublished and is not fair, it is actually super disappointing. Not many studios follow the rules to the letter. I am working super hard, crazy hours, even on Sundays. That is to say, there is no time left. If I was asked 5+ years ago I would be honored to do all the above but now the situation has changed, the world has changed.

If the Joomla-JED-LinkChecker is in the condition you describe, then it clearly damages every single business or developer out there. I opened a ticket that will be ignored (?) or some nice guy will apologize a month later and ask me to get involved like it happened last time.

Again, I respect everyone’s work, but if some script causes damage, I would take it down till some soul fixes it. I would love to do that myself, but I will have to stop paying my bills first.

Sincerely

Check you spam folder, please. The plugin sends out alert about the broken link found one month before the extension is unpublished. You have PLENTY of time to fix the issue before the extension gets unpublished. The fact that the notification lands in your spambox, or simply gets overlooked does not entitles you to accuse anyone else.
Keeping the JED in the best shape is more important for the few people still on board than ensuring, that everyone keeps their inboxes in best shape. The one month grace period is more, than sufficient to take action.
This bot helped us to get rid a large number of dead/unsupported extensions. Weigth this, before you continue your rant.
Here is one of these alerts sent by the bot I received recently:

Code: Select all

Your listing has broken links

Hello Szekely Denes,

The Joomla Extensions Directory automated link check detected that the extension "D******** T****" has broken links.

Please ensure that the following link/s are correct:

Best Regards,
The Joomla! Extensions Directory
BTW, I need to pay my bills to, I am full time freelancer for decades in one of Europe's poorest countries. Excuses does not add a value to this discussion. You don't want to volunteer - your choice, you don't need to explain your decision to anyone. There are two kinds of people here (and everywhere): givers and takers. That's it. We live in such a world.

First of all, I run my own mail server and there is nothing in the junk while I have no filtering in the specific mailbox receiving notifications from the JED. Secondly I have a special folder in Thunderbird for JED messages. Your assumption is that the email was sent and received a month before. I wish I had received it a month before because when I did receive it “yesterday” I acted immediately only to see it already unpublished. But even in that case, I have nothing in the logs of the server that indicates a block. May I guess that you also assume that I lie ?

You raise the tones and get angry and criticize my attempt to communicate the problem as a rant. It is insulting to say the things you say as if I gave you this right. So keep your philosophy about givers and takes for yourself because you don’t know me and stop this personal attack, it makes you look strange publicly.

As you do not seem to provide any help in this topic I would kindly ask you to stop, or just apologize and we can move on.

Probably I am the liar. Probably I have no idea on when, how and why was decided to make this plugin work this way. Probably I am also lying about how I am experiencing this in real life. Probably I am also lying about the mails received from JED on this subject. Probably...
That's it. I can accept, that you are seeing me (us) as liars. I am not sure, that the (former) colleague, who had written the plugin will take it as easy as I am doing it. Probably not. That's one of reasons he left the boat.
That's it. Nothing new. I am apologizing everyone, that I am still there, breathing and trying to do what I promised. And I am also apologizing everyone, that I fail to provide info I have no access to. Yea, being a JED team member does not automatically means that I know everything and I have access to every bit of info related with this. I am apologizing, again, for my ignorance.
Also I am apologizing for my failure to make the JED perfect. That's it. Moving on...

There is no need to imply that anybody is seeing you as a liar (or liars) or calling you one. Dropping the level of the public conversation with personal attacks and the things you said doesn't benefit anybody. It just poisons this forum.

Underlining technical problems should not be taken personally. Nobody is attacking you. I welcome bug or issue reports as they are allowing me to progress and help everybody.

I have no reason not to believe that you have received emails as you described, so have I in the past, and I know them very well. This says nothing. But this whole irony from your side now is unacceptable. This is not what I have posted for. I came to communicate a technical issue. Technology is like that. It comes with its issues. If you were willing to help and be a "giver" as you call it, you would attempt it already, but you chose otherwise.

So thanks for your input here to this technical issue @webgobe, but I am here to resolve this problem not to chat.
