first joomla school...Need advice please

Post by moisea » Sat Apr 26, 2008 2:14 am

hello, i am trying to build a site for my kids school using joomla 1.5 for the first time and might need some assistance along the way. the school has a kindergarten, Lower School and an Upper School and i would like to be able to:
- give access to the staff, Parents and students from the Lower/Upper school
- send newsletters/articles to parents and get parents comment
- staff pages where they can talk about their subject also allowing students to download or upload assignments (doc man???)
to name few.... anyone knows what compos/mods/plugins would be great and suitable to achieve the objective mentioned above. are thinking of some other point i could add? hey, please feel free to let me know. i am open to any advice..
many thanks.

Use Community Builder (almost ready for J! 1.5) and make it admin approval for registration so you can verify registrants. Using Community Builder you can also gather more information about the person registering.

Newsletter Extension

Not sure on this one. For 1.0.X UHP2 is good but for 1.5.X I'm not so sure.
MyJSpace: http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/
or some multi-blog component tied into DocMan?

hope that helps a bit.

thanks igeoffi, i really appreciate your opinion . Regarding community builder i tried the version of 1.0.x but it made my site very slow and i was really frustrated with the support that i decided that i could do without. never touch it since. hope the 1.5 version would be better.
regarding the newsletter extension i tried acajoom news which is not bad but for it is still in legacy. has any body tried the Vemod News Mailer extension? how good is it compare to acajoom news?
again thnk you for your suggestion. :)

you might as well take a look at this package by edugeek:

though it is still in J1.0 but at least you might have an idea on what extensions are you going to use. ;)

no it wont work in the J1.5. you'll do a lot of conversion. from the core itself up to the template.

hello, i need help please regarding extended menu and rounded corner. is there someone that would willing to assist in either or both problem i am encountering ?
the extended menu isn't showing the dropdown menu even though the submenu were created in the mainmenu which is not published.
As for the rounded corners for my modules, images are not showing even though the url link display the images the corresponding images to make the rounded corners. here is an example with Module Class Suffix:-grey

Code: Select all

div.module-grey h3, div.moduletable-grey h3 {
font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 1em;
font-weight: bold;
color: #4773ba;
margin: -2px -8px 0 -8px;
border-bottom: 1px solid #cdcdcd;
padding-left: 10px;
padding-bottom: 2px;
}
div.module-grey, div.moduletable-grey {
background: url(../images/rounded/jos_box_grey_tl.png) 0 0 no-repeat;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
margin-bottom: 20px;
}
div.module-grey div, div.moduletable-grey div {
background: url(../images/rounded/jos_box_grey_tr.png) 100% 0 no-repeat;
}
div.module-grey div div, div.moduletable-grey div div {
background: url(../images/rounded/jos_box_grey_bl.png) 0 100% no-repeat;
}
div.module-grey div div div, div.moduletable-grey div div div {
background: url(../images/rounded/jos_box_grey_br.png) 100% 100% no-repeat;
padding: 8px;
width: auto !important;
width: 100%;
}
div.module-grey div div div div { background:none; }

Any help would be appreciated.
