New Joomla site for Environmental High School

Hello everyone,

My name is Heidi, and this is my first Joomla forum post!  I first was a Mambo girl, but the day Joomla came out, it was easy for me to make the switch.  I've been loving it ever since.  8)

I am finally ready to work on my first really big Joomla project.  My former high school has just created an alumni association for the 1800 plus students who have graduated from our fantastic high school.    We have created a small volunteer "web team" right now that will build the website over the summer.  We know that once the framework is up we can tweek it to our hearts content, but right now we want to get organized, and have a good setup.

Here are a few questions I can think of at the moment:

1) We are planning on having alumni and current students add content to the website themselves.  How have you set up the levels for them to have the ability to add content without getting into the admin areas where they shouldn't be?

2) Has anyone out there worked on a Joomla site where there are multiple classes, or groups of students?  How have you organized the sections and categories?

3) any helpful hints you want to pass on to a site that is clean and fresh and new?  What would you have done differently if you could start over with a clean slate?

I'll have more questions along the way, but I'll start with this.  Thanks in advance for your help!
Have a super day!
Sincerely,

Heidi

Thanks for posting the link!  I hadn't seen that hack before!
Wow that looks great!  We'll have to look into implementing that!

Couldn't they add content fromt he front end as authors? It doesn't get published and they can't mess with others.....

Hi - I also am looking for enhanced Access Control ability.

A warning If you are considering the JACLPlus component.  Please read the reviews of that component.

http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/

I am working on several Joomla sites whose content will initially be managed by 1 or a few people. Later would like to delegate content management tasks out by section or category.  These tasks include editing existing pages.

So I am looking for enhanced Access Control ability, with an emphasis on front-end editing.

Given the lack of options I can find at the Components section of forum, I may just have to write my own. :)

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Hi -

No and No. I am afraid I made empty boasting with no product to show for it. One thing to keep in mind is that every article has a last modified date/time. (And 'modified by' in the db, though this does not appear in my 1.5.1 version in the admin view).

Access Control Lists (ACL) and that topic are popular topics in the forums. A discussion of ACL
here: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=500&t=275897 and a very informative one here
http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=231&t=79705 and of course by searching the forums for 'ACL'.

I have seen mention that the next version of Joomla will incorporate more of this type of content management control.
So ... 1.6 perhaps(?).

Not much help. But ACL is something to look forward to!

There is really only one option for a School if you want classes etc setup and that's Moodle - Moodle is not a pretty or functional as Joomla but for education it's the best. If you want both then you can wrap Joomla around Moodle - google joomoo.
