Just a brief summary of this problem for those reading through. If you are using Joomla 1.0.x then migrate to the latest version. Even if you go to the latest version 1.0.15 you may still have this problem. The homepage not showing is PHP related, some deprecated functions in php will cause this issue in Joomla 1.0.x.

Hosts can not support older versions of PHP forever (I know cuz I am one!) so you will have to migrate your site eventually so best to do it now before more of the site starts to break.
