creating user login/registration

Hi,
I have been seriously struggling with setting up my registered users function. I've got the login part to work but when I click on "create account" it takes me to http://mysite/index.php/user-profile?view=registration and there is nothing there. No errors either. I have error reporting at maximum. Also, there is no profile? When I click on "user profile" it takes me to http://mysite/index.php/user-profile. It just shows my user login in name. I can't figure out where or how to configure the profile page if I'm supposed to do so. I figured when creating a user-login module and connecting it to a login menu item that it would be all automatic. I've looked at numerous tutorials and that's all they seem to do and their screen shots show everything but mine simply doesn't work. I purchased "Ajax improved login/registration" which is what I really want to use but I can't even get the basic login function to work properly. I could sure use some help with this. Detailed instructions. All the info I find on line are all the same and the steps seem to be quite simple but it simply isn't working.
