We often receive questions asked on this forum from people who write that they have used some "manual" mechanism to update from one version of J! to another. Sometimes the term manual update is confused with the Upload & Update feature of the Joomla! Update component. Sometimes the term manual update is used by people who use the internet to find information on how to update J! (when the Joomla! Update component doesn't work) and they are referred by Google here: https://docs.joomla.org/Updating_Joomla_(Manual_Method).
The documentation I just mentioned describes replacing the file system used by a J! website with the files extracted from an installation package (or an "update package") people can download.
Let us be absolutely clear about this: there is no currently applicable manual update method to update from one version of J! to another that involves extracting files from https://downloads.joomla.org/ and replace the files in the filesystem used by that [J!] website.
The documentation page has been earmarked for deletion for more than two years and yet some people still believe it is relevant today. The page has not been deleted. It is a dangerous method and can break websites. For instance, only yesterday I read:
As I mentioned at the outset, I don't know whether this forum user is talking about the Upload & Update feature of the Joomla! Update component or the "manual method" described in JDOCs. It's confusing.
If there is someone from the documentation team who reads this, would they please delete the page https://docs.joomla.org/Updating_Joomla_(Manual_Method) from the site.
