Wanted: Major Events Proposals

Post by mcsmom » Sun Nov 08, 2009 11:56 pm

We're looking for local teams who are interested in putting together proposals for major events starting in the fourth quarter of 2010 and in 2011. The number of events is going to depend on the proposals received.

You can read the formal request for proposals here:
http://community.joomla.org/blogs/community/1067.html

We're hoping people will use the forum to find each other and to discuss ideas.

P.S. Ryan is in Brazil, but he'll be by to talk about this more when he gets home.

It's a great step forward for the Joomla! Community to take on doing more major events. The Joomla! Days have had a lot of success on a local and regional basis, but I agree, it's important to have larger live events as well, to share knowledge, make connections and build a stronger community.

Our organization (The CMS Association) hosts the annual CMS Expo Learning & Business Conference every year. The Joomla! Community is featured prominently at this event, and has taken a lead role since our first event was planned in 2007. We extend an invitation to the whole community to continue to make our "casa" your own - experience 3 days of great training by stand-outs in the international Joomla! community, enjoy socials every night with great new friends, and make business connections from all around the world and be a part of our annual CMSA Spotlight Awards Celebration, recognizing the best and brightest in the web design, development, admin, business and non-profit volunteer communities.

Thanks to the whole Joomla! Community for being an important part of it since the beginning - a truly unintended success story for Joomla! as well as the entire CMS Community!

IMO CMS Expo plays an important role because the attendants are made up of users from different CMS's. That reason itself should make it a key marketing event for J!.org to boost the user base. Holding an event with other CMS's also encourage exchange of ideas externally and not just from within.

John and Linda have set a high bar of quality in the CMS Expo events. It would be great to see the the joomla.org organization and the Joomla community support their efforts as much as they were able.

CMS Expo is the perfect venue for every level of Joomla! user, from newb to pro third party devs to core team members. As the CMS Expo grows in popularity and attendance from more varied CMS's, it would be nice to see the Joomla! community's involvement grow with it.

Thanks guys! The conference is only as great as its participants (seriously) and so far, it's been an outstanding event. Our hope would be that the Joomla Community would make CMS Expo its annual Spring destination.

We have a whole team of folks in place to help with all the logistics, making arrangements with speakers, marketing, publicity and major media on-site, sound, video, all the equipment, hotel accommodations and transportation, not to mention the entertainment (I'm getting woozy just writing this...lol). With 3 packed days of Joomla! learning for users, paired up with advanced sessions, socials and business networking, it means for one of those 4 quarterly events, everybody from Joomla! - leadership included - can focus on what they do best - having a great time, sharing your message, training and building the community even more.

We absolutely love doing this, and hope folks will continue to come be a part of it. It's so cool, it's surreal. ;)

@John,

I know you didn't submit a proposal for 2011 but you are certainly welcome to do so for 2012 (assuming that this initiative is judged a success).

@others
There are a number of commercially organized conferences put together by various people that are fun and useful for community members to attend. That's great, but they are really something very different than what we are talking about for these events.

@Krit,

We know you always put on amazing events. Since we didn't get any major events proposals from Asia I'd love to see you put together a group from several countries to create a multiday Joomla! Day Asia conference.

It would be great to get a team from Africa doing something similar.

Hi Krit,

We can't take any major conference proposals at this time because the deadline passed. It's possible if you want to have a super Joomla! Day in the spring that might work. If we do end up with Australia in October/November 2010 we won't want to pull a lot of the potential audience to another major event in the same period. You may want to see if you can get together with organizers from some other Southeast Asian countries.

Hi Krit,
I am part of the Australian organising team that prepares an international JoomlaDay for late 2010.
Could you envisage to join forces and make it an Australasian event? Melbourne is an exciting city and if there are a number of delegates from Thailand interested in coming over, we could strike airline and accommodation deals to make it even more worthwhile.
If that sounds exciting to you, would you be able to add such a question to your survey?
We can have the following Australasian JoomlaDay in Thailand - I would certainly be on the list of delegates...
Thanks,
Matthias

Should we be hearing back from OSM as to whether or not our ideas will be considered and therefore begin building the more complete proposal for second round consideration? I'm a bit confused on process and what we should be doing next.

Thanks!

Who are you speaking for? Your post implies you submitted a proposal, which I've not heard anyone mention. Maybe I'm misreading...

Full proposals were due the first week in January as stated in the RFP.

Elin -

The last message we got was from Ryan - the day after our submission. When I spoke to Ryan, he indicated OSM would go through the initial proposals and announce which locations would be invited to develop more complete proposals for consideration of the second round.

We never did hear back from him, even though he posted that he would tell us what the next steps were.

Who submitted second proposals?

So in United states, then next event will be in Chicago 2011? Nothing in 2010?
