Thanks for that. But it was too easy, my admin name is now quite obscure.

Can you access the configuration.php file via php?

Or if you have access to PhpMyAdmin on cpanel.

Just change it there.

HELP  :(
I just opened the config.php and changed the pasword from the encypted mode to its actual password, and now I cant access the site at all. Says cant access database. How do I get back to original encrypted password, or start afresh... either I dont know the admin username or password - which is where I began this episode.

Many thanks

do not modify anything in the configuration file!!! Edit the file and insert the old password ;)

Go to your phpmyadmin and you will find all information in jos_users ;)

Thanks for the quick reply.
I entered the password into an md5 encryption site and repasted it into the configuration.php
Still logging into the site says, cant connect to db  ???
What to do...
Thanking you

Initial Admin ID and Password lost or not working

Hello!

I'm having a very similar problem.

I thought I captured and stored in a file on my local 'puter the Joomla Admin ID an PW.  But I cannot login with them.  When access the "lost password" functionality, it asks me to input the ID.  I've tried as many combinations as I can think of, but keep getting a message that the ID does not exist.  Does the email ID also have to match?  I have yet to try different email ID's.

Here's the convoluted steps I took to get to where I am today:

I am hosting on GoDaddy (which I know several of you don't like, but it is working for my on another site).
I am re-using a hosting site that I had previously been using to host a different web site, let's call the old domain (which is now pointing elsewhere) old-site.com

I requested GoDaddy to install Joomla in the root and it was installed.
I then submitted a domain name change (but this domain name is not pointing to this hosting platform yet) = tomrosspool.com
I then created a new domain name, and opened the hosting control panel and specified "Add Domain" and added this new domain name = gk.info

Now I'm able to access the end user site, but unable to login to the administrator site.  (Also note that things were weird until I saw your note about updating the configuration.php file, so I changed all the occurances of old-site.com to gk.info, and now things are looking better and I'm no longer getting any "not found" messages.)

The database ID/PW appears to be fine.  It is the SuperAdmin ID/PW that I apparently do not know.  Is this stored in the database?  Is there a way I could access the DB directly and lookup these values?

I do have FTP access to the site.  Should I ask GoDaddy to re-install Joomla?  Will this cause any problems since a Joomla db already exists?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

GK

---------------------------------------

Problem solved.  I continued to search for any more info.  I found that I could use a php-sql tool to access the DB from the GoDaddy site.  Then I saw the email id I had used.  So, I re-attempted the password reset using this and it worked.  So I was able to login.

If you are having similar problems, login to the database, select the "jos_users" table, then select "browse" to see the entries.  Then use the recommendation above to request a new password using the ID and email listed.  Note, the password is encrypted, so it isn't useable.

Thanks to all who post here and reply with help.  -g

my host solved the problem for me; they cut/pasted the encrypted password from the configuration.php and pasted it into the control panel mysql pswd spot. I understand this is no longer encrypted, but at least you get in again. I guess you can change the password thereafter. [using bluehost/control panel]. hope this helps

An ex-employee set up our website and we do not have the username and password. IPage provided us with the URL to direct us to the login page so we can edit the site, but we have no log in details and every e-mail I can think of has been used to try and re-set. I cannot find a telephone number to call Joomia for help
