Website Migration

Postby DiAntunes » Tue Jan 26, 2016 7:41 pm

Hello all,

I was hoping I could get some pointers on how to migrate an entire website to a newer version of Joomla! Long story short, I recently acquired a business, which already had a website and a website manager (designer? I am sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology, but bear with me). This manager/designer is using Joomla! 1.0 version for an unknown reason and he charges this world and another to migrate the site. And here I am on this forum trying to get some help and see if it is possible for me to do it myself.

It may be worth mentioning that the website is a database with paying registered users (not sure if that would make any difference). Also, the domain is registered under the manager/designer's name and I do not have any credentials to access the backdoor (I think that's what you call it) for the website.

I have read that you need to access a CC panel (?), in order to do it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. If possible, I would like to migrate the website without having to pay for this seemingly incompetent person, so I can give him the boot ASAP.

Thank you in advance,
Diana

Joomla 1.0 is very old. One reason old versions are not upgraded is dependence on unsupported in-house or customised 3rd party extensions.

If you already have a quotation for migration, you may want to get a comparison by posting your requirements and contact details to the Professional Development Services forum at viewforum.php?f=177 - or check the Joomla Resources Directory (JRD) at https://resources.joomla.org/en/

You need to have a full audit done of the current template(s), components and any custom development done. Full back end access is needed, that is super user credentials to http://example.com/administrator, and access to the cPanel, provided by the hosting company. This normally includes file transfer access by FTP or WinSCP.

Depending on the company's contract with the current developer, you should take ownership of the domain in due course.
