FAQ: Why did my installation of an extension fail?

There are many possible reasons an installation can fail.
Below is a list of common mistakes, problems and things to check.

1. Make sure you are using the right installer, modules with the module installer, components with the component installer, mambots with the mambot installer. Plugins for specific components are usually installed through an installer associated with that component rather than the joomla! installers.

2. Make sure that the file is not double zipped. Try unzipping the zipped file. You may find that it contains another zipped file which is the one that should be installed. Some complex extensions include modules, a component and mambots all in one zipped file and the big file needs to be unzipped to get the separate installation zipped files.

3. Make sure the file is not too big for your host. Hosts often have a maximum upload size and if the file is too big you may need to use the install from directory method.

4. Check to see if you have previously installed the extension and if so, check to make sure that all files that need to be removed prior to a new installation have been removed. Be careful, however so that you do not lose important files.

Before doing anything, read any documentation that comes with the extension.
