Cannot Access Administration Page

Post by kaplan71 » Wed Oct 29, 2008 8:37 pm

Hi there --

I am trying to access the Administration page in order to add a new plugin to our system. The way I have normally accessed the backend of Joomla is by typing in the following URL:
http://<web page>/Administration
However, instead of getting the appropriate page, I get the following output:
Object Not Found! Error 404
What is the cause for this, and how can I correct it? Thanks.

Unless you have changed something manually, the admin URL is yoursite.com/administrator NOT Administration
Step1. Read the instructions. Step2. Refer to step 1. Step 3. Backup

Hi there --

Sorry about my misspelling. The URL I entered was <my site>/Administrator.

Any chance you have renamed the folder? Can you use FTP to confirm it is there, and it has not been renamed?
Step1. Read the instructions. Step2. Refer to step 1. Step 3. Backup

Hi there --

I connected to the server via ssh and checked for the existence of the administrator folder. The folder is located in the /srv/www/htdocs/content directory, it is owned by root:root, and its timestamp is 2007-08-19.

compare the perms and ownership to other folder in there... being owned by root doesn't sound right

Hi there --

I compared the perms and ownership of the folder with those of another Joomla-based server that is not having this issue. As far as I can tell the perms and ownership in the problematic server match those of the server that is able to display the Administrator page.

Perhaps install a fresh batch of administrator files

Hi there --

The URL for the server itself is the following:

http://gray.mgh.harvard.edu

while that for the Administrator webpage is as follows:

http://gray.mgh.harvard.edu/Administrator

Your Joomla installation is in a sub folder called "content", therefore the path for admin is http://gray.mgh.harvard.edu/content/administrator.

You will also find this folder has been password protected by someone in your group.
Step1. Read the instructions. Step2. Refer to step 1. Step 3. Backup

First of all, don't use filezilla. It has all your passwords stored in plain text and there is at least one trojan/virus that steals your sites details and infects all your sites.

Secondly if you can't ftp to the site then you have a fundamental problem. Either your site is gone or the ftp details have been changed. Either way is not good.

I suggest that you think about restoring the site from a previous backup. Backup the whole site first from your host's control panel and then restore the site from the previous backup. You should have a backup from just prior to installing kunena. If you don't have a recent backup then you need to start learning how/why fast!

Send your Joomla version details.

Hi there!

I have a different problem, but it seems related to the same issue.

I can access my administrator's page and I can do all administrative tasks EXCEPT that when I click on the Plugins menu ... I see a blank page ... Just a blank page . I cannot change the parameters of the plugins.

I tried to restore the folder /administrator/components/com_plugins from another working Joomla installation, but still the same.

Any helpful ideas???
Regards,,,

The blank page is a PHP error. Check the host's control panel and look for any related errors.

When did this occur? rather than taking an action to fix something when you don't know the cause, think about restoring the system to a state prior to the problem (backups!)

Just in case you are infected by a trojan ensure you are running a good a/v tool when you access the site that will be able to pick up any nasty script injections as the scripts are run.

Versions please.

Thanks, Beededea for your response.

Actually, I don't think there is any problems in the hosting as I have other sites under the same host which are running smoothly. Also, the problem just happened a day before.

I dont like to make a full restore, as this will remove some important updates in my content.

Finally, is there a specific anti virus you recommend ?? And how can I use it remotely??

Regards,,,

I didn't say there was a problem with the hosting. I said check the error log in the host's control panel.

Of course you don't want to restore but that is not really relevant to the problem. It sounds as if you have not been taking regular backups?

You may have no choice but to restore, either to fix the problem or to test if a prior backup still has the fault (in which case it could be an environmental problem). In any case you can easily save the current content by backing up the existing data before the restore. The point is you have to consider a restore as a tool for diagnosis or repair.

I'm still waiting for the versions?

You need to perform an a/v scan with the tools you already use. I know what I use but first have a look on this forum for good suggestions. You need to have an a/v tool that stops injections when you are using the browser. To scan the whole site transfer it down and scan it there.

Left my computer for a while and the site timed out. Now I can not log back into the back end.

I get the following message..
Use a valid username and password to gain access to the administrator backend.
Go to site home page.
At he link provided I get to the front end of my website but I have no link to the login page. Can anyone tell me how to recover the login screen?

If you mean the Authentication - Joomla plugin then Use PHPmyadmin find jos_plugins table, find the right entry for the login plugin in the table and manually enable it.

If you mean the login module, then same but find the module table.

Always take backups prior to any tinkering!

OK....... I disabled the login module in the module manager the last time I was able to get into the backend. I am building the site on the server, not on my own machine.

On my server cPanel file manager, here...........public_html>administrator>modules>mod_login
I see these files..........
tmpl
helper.php
index.html
mod_login.php
mod_login.xml

Not sure what you mean regrading the module table. Please clarify.

Nothing to do with files and the file manager.

In the database.

Go to your control panel and find PHPmyadmin, you will use this to modify the database manually, then find the jos_modules table. If you aren't familiar with what you are doing then take a backup first.

If you aren't happy with making changes to the db then you need to find a friendly CMS web dev to do it for you.

Very sensible.

The best bit of advice is always, always take backups prior to any tinkering! If you don't know how to do that then you need even more advice.

I backed up the site and downloaded the zip file to my own computer.
At my server cpanel installed a new Joomla site.
Uploaded the.sql file of my original site but encountered the same problem with the authentication login in.
I now understand a little about phpmyadmin. I can not see a table called jos_plugins. I do see one called jos_sessions that appears to be the admin screen. I need to enable the authentication login screen.

Can you help me? If not, where can I find someone who know how to do this? Please advise.

MarionLorence - There was no need to install a new version of Joomla. Why did you do that? Did you do it to create a new test site? I do hope you didn't overwrite the live site. If so, that was not sensible and did not achieve much.

All you needed to do was to look at PHPMYadmin and look at the module table and re-enable the login module.

If you took a backup beforehand then at least you have a copy of the site as it was, did you take a full backup using cpanel's backup utility?
