Activation email not being sent!

Post by quarkstar » Tue Jan 13, 2009 4:14 pm

Hi all,

I have Joomla version 1.0.15 on my site, and I have checked on "Yes" for the user activation email option. When I register on the site and click submit, I get a message saying a confirmation email has been sent to your account containing an activation link. I have tried Yahoo and Gmail accounts but no email is sent. Also, no emails get sent with the 'Lost password retrieval' option.

Please help!

My email config is as follows:

Mailer: PHP mail function
Mail from: myname@myhost.com
From Name: myname
Sendmail Path: /usr/sbin/sendmail
SMTP Auth: No
SMTP User: blank
SMTP Pass: blank
SMTP Host: localhost

Thanks in advance,
quark

I'm also having the same problem as above.

The notification is being sent to admin only,
not the user, so it defeats the purpose.

I have tried all the other configurations (sendmail & smtp)
as well, but getting errors and timeouts.

The mail server is functioning properly as I can recieve and send
email from my client or cpanel.

Can anyone suggest a solution, please?

My install is J! 1.0.15

Many thanks.

excentricus, you also receive the admin emails only? or dont receive any email?

Are you both sure you have "activation email" enabled on global config?

Hi webrp!

The answer is yes to both of your questions.
Admin gets the email of new user registration,
but the user doesn't get it, and the new user
email activation is enabled in global config...

I've had previous installations that worked just fine,
but this one is different & I can't figure out what it is.

Any ideas where else I should look into this?

Many thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem...

Admin gets notification about the new user having been created, but activation emails aren't being sent.. and I've tried both php_mailer and sendmail... no difference..

Joomla version 1.5.10...

The weird part is that activation emails are going just fine to every other mail system (gmail, hotmail etc.) but to Yahoo accounts. I cannot be spam feature in yahoo as emails don't show up there either.

Ohhh.. here is a very interesting fact..

In the admin panel, I went to mass mail users, and picked the group with my test users... if I actually use that function.. they DO get the mails... that prooves that

1) My system CAN send mail
2) Joomla CAN send mail

.. the activation emails just isn't being sent/received...

I also have this problem. Registering guests arent able to receive the activation link email. Looked high and low. But no answers so far. We look like a bunch of lost sheeps... mehhhh...

I tried sending via the mass mail. It works! So its not a Joomla problem. Hmmm...

What else should I look.

(I use Joomla 1.5 + Jfusion + PHPBB3.0).

ok, i had a similar problem, what i did to fix it was to change to the default template (rhuk_milkyway).
the registration process then worked as it should.
check that your templates are compatible.
hope that helps

I have been following this thread desperately waiting for a reply that may help. By the way, I tried the template thing and it didn't work. Also looked for mods that take over the registration but still no help.

Someone must at least know which file to look at.

Please help.

HI Tarek,

I just totally give up. I also tried emailing people who had this problem but finally solved it. They never reply, which I found disappointing. If I had a problem & its hard to solve, but I solved it, I will be glad to share it with someone. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case.

So my temp solution was to totally turn the Joomla registration off & use the forum (PHPbb3) as the only registration channel. Then I use Jfusion to connect PHPBB & Joomla. Hope this helps.

I too had this problem and I think I have solved it.

I was receiving the "For Information Only only Emails" the usernames and email address of the person registering, but in self tests I was not receiving the Activation Email.

The problem was, I'd been hacked in some way and whenever I tried to register, Mail Delivery Failure emails would rapidly fill my site's mailbox. The mailer would time out trying to send to non-existent recipients and so Action Emails could not be sent until teh hour had passed. But which time hundreds of other Viral emails had contiued to stall my mail mailer.

How did I solve it? FULL and SERIOUS Virus scanning of my local drive revealed a Trojan.worm thingey. Buried as it happens in a JSAS.com file. I changed my Virus scanner from AVG to Bit Protector. AVG failed to find the Trojan.

Then I changed all my Email passwords, my CPanel Password, I took the precaution of locking the Administrator Directory from Cpanel, as a second line of defence. i scanned my local machine several times more, Chenged my passwords again.

I had to write another Email filter to catch a second batch of Mail Delivery Failure Mails - how did they get through again?

I wrote account Level Email Filters in CPanel to filter out these rogue emails.

I upgraded ALL my Components and modules.

I upgraded to 1.5.11 - using FTP is not so tricky.

I downloaded a whole site BackUp from CPanel. Virus scanned it several times teh same for teh database files, download and scan.

And now I seem to be able to send out Activation emails.

My advice, get a serious Host working for you and keep everything up to date at all times. Use 16 character passwords and generally be security aware.

I'm going to check my emailbox isn't infected again!

I just did a bodge job but really, this only relates to the people who use JFususion. I first set Joomla as the slave, and phpbb3 as the master. I made it so users could register on the forums. The log in on the site remained, but I changed the settings under module, so that when people click register on the site, it would just link them directly to the registration on the forum. Remember guys, with JFusion, you can log in on both at the same time.

I have the same problem...emails & activation mails are not reaching destination especially to yahoo ids...it works well with others. All these unrouted mails are being captured by my server's default mail and when I closely looked in to those mails what I realized is Yahoo is treating these mails as Fraud/ phishing. Following is the error message found in unrouted mails:

host e.mx.mail.yahoo.com [216.39.53.1]: 554 Message not allowed - UP Email not accepted for policy reasons. Please visit http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/defer/defer-04.html. The given link tells:

"There is something about the message contents that Yahoo! Mail will not accept for policy reasons. For instance, it is against Yahoo! Mail's policy to send phishing/fraud attempts or viruses."

Why yahoo is treating these mails as fraud?

PS: This problem never occurred before transferring my site to Joomla so this shows the problem is not related with domain name.

Hi, this may sound weird but can you all check that how php is operated? I have apache2handler and i have found problems when my site was under construction and placed in subdomain.

Also i notice that when server host turn "Mail sent by user nobody being discarded due to sender restrictions in WHM->Tweak Settings" on, emails dont leave and new accounts cant be confirmed.

I dont figure out that why sender is our host instead of my own domain. All settings should be fine in joomla 1.5.9.

What I found is that the actual email address has to be the exact same on Joomla as it is on your server. In my case including caps. On my Joomla I had caps in my email address and no caps on the email I was using on my server. I made everything lower case on my Joomla email address and then the activation link was sent. My webmail on joomla was set to php and everything worked fine without me having to change the type of mail I was using.

Hello,
I also faced and facing same problem with my joomla and phpbb installations.
I think the problem is of server setting, it prohibits php mail function to sent mail to free mail providers i.e. yahoo, gmail, etc.
As in Joomla I changed php mail function to SMTP, it worked fine. But the problem in Phpbb still remains. :-\

I had this same problem...and eventually figured out what was causing it.

In the Global Config > Server > Mail Settings

The "Mail From" address was still set as the default "you@yourdomain.com"

As soon as I switched it for my email...everything worked like a charm.

Best of luck!
