how to install plugins?

please let me know how to install plugins in joomla
i have downloaded one zip file but i dont know how to install
please give reply

There are two main releases in Joomla!!

1.0.x

Here you need to browse to your administration site typically http://<yoursite><portnumber if any>/administrator
Go to Installers, there choose the correct type of plugin (Component, Module or Mambot)
That gives you a screen where you can browse to the zip file, upload it and then see the results.
In case of Mambots and Modules one must remember to publish them.

AND

1.5.x


Here, browse to your administration site typically http://<yoursite><portnumber if any>/administrator
Go to Extentions\Install-Uninstall. From there on, the same steps as above when it comes to uploading the file.

In the 1.5.x versions, if the plugin you are uploading is not designed for this version, you will have to activate Legacy Support Mode.

To do this, go to Extensions\Plugin Manager\
in the Filter Field, Type 'Legacy' and press enter.
then you should see 'System-Legacy'. Here press the red cross and confirm that it is now a green tickmark.

Since this was the first result in Google, in Joomla 2.5, you simply go to the extension manager, then click on the browse button to find the zip file you downloaded, click the upload and install button, then go over to the plugin manager and enable it.

I have a copy & paste plug in code. I keep getting a "Unknown archive type" when I try to upload and install it. I copied & pasted it onto a word doc and then I go to extension manager in Joomla 2.5 "choose file" and try to "upload and install."
WHAT am I doing wrong???!!!! Help!!!
