user registration activation mail not sent

Post by xoundboy » Tue Apr 22, 2008 9:47 pm

I have a clean install of 1.0.15 and have tried both "sendmail" and "php mail function'" options but can't get the email activation link mail sent to the address given during new user registration.

any ideas?

Well, no one might have helped you but at least someone has the same problem. I can't get the user registration activation emails to send out either. I have tried all three selections. I am not sure what the problem is. Anyone know of a solution or mail tutorial?

Hi dan-man,

The problem ended up being my hosting provider's issue. They told me that it php mail was disabled internally for security measures but gave me an alternate solution which I will try. It always takes me much longer to solve problems because I am not that great with php, just basic html. :)

after doing quite a lot of digging about this topic I have come to a couple of conclusions:

1) If you're using smtp mail then afaik the mail server must be on the same IP address (or maybe just in the same domain - I'm not sure) for it to work

2) the php mailer function is dependent upon the host webserver's PHP configuration - if they have disabled PHP mailer then you won't be able to use it in Joomla

3) certain well-known public / free email service providers (eg Yahoo mail) will regard email activation links that are auto-generated by the joomla registration as junk mail and they will not appear in the inbox but in the junk / spam folder instead - it means that you will have to display a message to the user to look in their spam folder if they can't find the activation link mail in their inbox

good luck

Hi, I wonder if anyone has figured this out.

My provider doesnt support PHP mail function & sendmail. So they recommended me using SMTP server. I filled it up. And able to send an mass email out. However regarding the user registration activation mail, no users can receive them yet. Wonder any one know what's the magic to it?

I am using Joomla 1.5 + Jfusion + PHPBB3.0 (I was told its not a Jfusion/PHPBB thingy).

ok, guys. here is what you have to do:

1. check if your server supports PHP mail.

If YES...

2. go to the hosting configuration area of your server and find the place to configure the mail form.

3. type in the same email you have in joomla (back-end, site, global configuration, server, mail settings).

That's it. Let me know if it works. it did here.
8)

I found that the solution was far more easy than previously mentioned.

1. Go to "Site | Global Configuration"
2. Select "Server"
3. Check under Mail Settings the following:
SMTP Authentication = "yes"
SMTP Password = "your site admin mail account password"
4. Save

After a while you'll see all the mails piled up on in the send queue drop in :)

Hope this helps for all of you!

i have done it......it is easy......

1. Create a contact form and test it whether it is working fine or not
2. If it is working fine and receive proper mails from contact form then it will work and user Registration Activation Mail will be send to his ID

i have came across that if the user register with yahoo ID, the activation link may not send to the user, though it is Administrator or Registered User. mail will not be send...........i dont know why

it works with Gmail, Hotmail,

Please tell me if it works with Yahoo ID

Here is a possible solution to the activation email issue. For those who can send email via the contact form and can also send articles via the email send icon, but is not able to send activation emails to users who register via the registration form:

Select the following parameters:
Mailer: PHP Mail Function
Mail From: whatever email address you want to show from in the email
Sendmail Path: Usually /usr/sbin/sendmail , but depends on your host's structure
SMTP Authentication: Yes
SMTP Security: Depends on the host as well (for Bluehost select SSL)
SMTP Port: For Bluehost it is 26 for non-SSL, 25 for most other hosts, If SSL, then 465
SMTP Username: Must enter for Bluehost
SMTP Password: Must enter for Bluehost
SMTP Host: localhost in most cases

I racked my brain trying every option possible until filling in this section completely finally worked for me.

Good Luck!!!

Was set up with php mailer and after setting up with smtp and not changing anything else we are able to send email when selecting the email icon on a page to send someone a reference to that article on the site. Will this also affect the registration notification emails?
Before I changed from php to smtp the registration process was sending out the confirmation email to the person who was trying to register but after they did the confirmation the administrator did not get a notice that the person registered so they could be approved.
Will changing this php to smtp affect that function?

Here is how we currently are setup:

Mailer SMTP
Mail from FXCRC@wwmgmt.org
From Name Fragile X Foundation Clinics
Sendmail Path /usr/sbin/sendmail
SMTP Authentication No
SMTP Security none
SMTP Port 25
SMTP Username
SMTP Password
SMTP Host localhost
