Adding custom fields to Add Article Admin page

Hello all. I am new to this board, but I have been programming for a few years now. I find myself searching for an open source project that I find useful and then deciding to master the inner workings. Joomla! seems to be my next passion.

I have a question on properly adding custom fields to a new article, specifically "/administrator/index.php?option=com_content&task=add"
I simply would like to add another text field that would get inserted into the database along with the standard fields. I need a little guidance and to what files I should be looking at to cleanly integrate new code. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
