FAQ for Joomla 1.5 Beta

Post by Hackwar » Thu Oct 19, 2006 8:44 am

These Q&As should help you with the most common questions on Joomla 1.5 beta. Discuss here.

Q: When will Joomla 1.5 stable be released?
A: When its ready. :) This beta is aimed at getting all the bugs and based on your feedback, we will tweak the backend a little bit more, change the texts and such. We most likely will release another beta and at least one release candidate. If you want to stay up to speed with development, get yourself a nightly build or check out the SVN. Look here for more informations.

Q: Will there be an update path from 1.5 beta to stable?
A: No.

Q: Why haven't you created the perfect, accessible and all satisfying output? Why has Joomla (again) failed in that area? We do we have to use hacks again?
A: We have something much better: We have the means for everybody to create the output he needs, be it specifically for his template or for accessibility reasons. This all will be possible without hacks and template specific. More on this in a developer blog post in the near future.

Q: What are the minimum system requirements for 1.5?
A: Apache 1.3.x or IIS, PHP 4.3 and MySQL 3.2.3

Q: Can I build a live site based on 1.5 beta?
A: We can't stop you to do so, but we strongly advise against it. We have reasons why we call it beta and not stable and as stated before, there will be no upgrade path.

Q: I can't install component/module/plugin/template x on 1.5 beta! You said it would be backwards compatible!
A: Please switch on the legacy mode in the global configuration on the server tab.

Q: I switched on legacy mode, but it still does not work!
A: Some extensions just don't work with Joomla 1.5 without some hacking. Please look in the extension directory or on the site of the developer if the extension is 1.5 aware.

Q: Why haven't you included into 1.5?
A: The aim of 1.5 is to make the interface simpler, create easier manageable code and to clean up the code base. Its a big improvement for programmers, too, because its strictly OO based. For the user, this means only small changes, but the best will come with the better, more stable and robust extensions third party developers can create.

Q: Can't you add feature x to Joomla 1.5 now?
A: Joomla 1.5 is feature complete. We wont add anything else in terms of features, we will only fix bugs.

god doesn't play dice with the universe. not after that drunken night with the devil where he lost classical mechanics in a game of craps.

Since the creation of the Internet, the Earth's rotation has been fueled, primarily, by the collective spinning of English teachers in their graves.
