What is the reasoning behind being able to save without attaching it to a category ?

Legacy I guess as the Static Contents will be migrated to this uncategorized section/category.

It's just a state and yes it accounts for the old content menu link.  I have a couple of sites that are mainly some component, maybe Joomlaboard, and then have 2 pages (a privacy policy and an about us).  It's quite useful just to have these uncategorised.

Why use Joomla then, instead of just a (good) forum?!
Many people use static - uncategorized- items for most of their sites! (don't know why, as it's much more time-consuming to link each of these to menus individually..).

Haha.  Ok the other sites are using our commerce system and they have some pages that just don't warrant a section and category.  It doesn't really matter, you choose whether you want ot use it or not.
