How to find which version of Joomla! I'm using?

I already know this is a stupid question, but how do I find which version of Joomla! I'm currently using (so that I'll know which patch to use to upgrade to .13?)

It is now June 2013. I am an absolute beginner trying to confirm which version of joomla I installed (I think it was 3.1). I do not see a version number at the bottom of the Administrator side, and neither do I find "/libraries/joomla/version.php". Can I get an updated answer?

Found my own answer. On the Control Panel, under the right side column titled "Quick Icons", there is a choice near the bottom of the list that reads "Joomla is up to date" (of course, if it isn't, the text would say something else;-). If you click on this, it tells you what version of Joomla you are running.

Happened to stumble upon this shortly after you did, redsue12, since I was looking for the same information.

In Joomla 3.1.1, you can go to System > System Information in Administrator. Alternatively, you can find this information at the top of /joomla.xml (see the <version /> element) or /libraries/cms/version/version.php (see $RELEASE and $DEV_LEVEL).

I'm more concerned doing this via PHP....any examples or documentation for this?

I don't see a need for separate versions of some modules/plugins in 2.5 -> 3.0 as the code is sometimes the same and even if slightly different it's easy enough to code against. I have one function I need to switch and that's it regarding Joomla framework if it is 2.5 or 3.x.

All I need is the Joomla version to key off so I can write one plugin that's 2.5 & 3 compatible.

Example,

Good question, I did not find the version looking everywhere then I went to System Information and got it there. Path is... Site->System Information. I am referring to Joomla 2.5.14 maybe the other version it could become easier to find out.

Visually it's very easy for reference to 'look up', but I guess no coding examples to be able to figure it out programatically? Probably a define in joomla config than maybe that can be used...
