Practical Guide Upgrade Joomla 1.0 to Joomla 3.3.6

Postby leolam » Wed Jan 07, 2015 4:15 am

Quick Upgrade guide from J1.0.xx --> Joomla 3.3.6

THIS IS A MAJOR OPERATION!

Fact: Basically no extension or template is compatible with Joomla 3.3.6! This process is mainly described to migrate users and articles to Joomla 3.3.6. All modules and templates etc are anyhow not compatible so that need to be redone in any case (copy/paste) so useless to get a headache about extensions, plugins or others. So users and articles it is (!)

Upgrade your Joomla 1.0.xx site to Joomla 1.0.15 (latest version) You can download that from Joomlacode after login in Joomlacode.org from the release section. Use this package Extract locally and upload and overwrite (in binary mode) all files and folders of the package

You need to download a working Joomla 1.x to Joomla 1.5 migrator script from our site (for free of course) http://gws-desk.com/external/migrator.zip

You install the zip as component -> after install go to the migrator component --> check all boxes (keep it simple!) --> Run.--> Export the sql file to your computer.

Extract and upload a fresh Joomla 1.5.26 from Joomlacode use this package to your domain and run the Joomla installer. Instead of "install example data" --> use "migrator script" and upload the script you got from your Joomla 1.0.xx site --> give the correct prefix as in your sql (probably jos_) , tick the "This script is a Joomla! 1.0 migration script" box and hit install

Next screen will show that (if all goes well) that the installation is successful. Follow the next steps and you are on Joomla 1.5! Make a backup! (Akeebabackup)

---> Review the documentation on the Joomla Migration Portal for detailed information but practically it works like:

Install Joomla 3.3.6 in a subdirectory of your Joomla 1.5 installation (do not install sample data!!!).

Get and Install SP Upgrade (all the others are inferior - imho -) and update the settings in the Options/settings tab of the component. Component is well documented . If all is set properly you can select all and hit upgrade --> few minutes later your site is on J3.3.6 --> Backup your site! (Akeebabackup)

Remove the Joomla 1.5 from root and delete the database in use by J15. Move the Akeebabackup to "root" and upload Akeeba's single file 'kickstart.php" (get it here) to root and run in your browser yoursite.com/kickstart.php and extract the .jpa file.

Create in your CTRL panel a new DB user and DB and assign user to have all functions for that database. After that

Run Akeebabinstaller (shows up after extraction of .JPA file). Remove after finish all Kickstart files.

Now your data is on Joomla 3.3.6 and you can add your new template, your extensions etc etc. It is as simple as described

Hi

I need to upgrade a site from 1.0.13 to 3.3.6 or the latest version.

I got as far as installing joomla 1.5 and it stalls after I click next to uk English language settings with the following message:

Error
An error has occurred.:

Cookies do not appear to be enabled on your browser client. You will not be able to install the application with this feature disabled. Alternatively, there could also be a problem with the server's session.save_path. If this is the case, please consult your hosting provider if you don't know how to check or fix this yourself.

So it seems that 1.5 cannot be installed in the normal way in my hosting account. Any ideas how on earth I install joomla 1.5?! Can the new installation files not just be uploaded and the database imported with an edit to the config script? I don't see why we need to go through the GUI installation.

Complete Newbie here, but I'm learning! I'm taking over an online newspaper that has never been upgraded. It is Joomla 1.0.12 Stable, from 25 Dec 2006. The webmaster is retiring and I'm doing a rapid-course on learning how to Joomla! Notice I did NOT say "crash-course!" The website is http://www.riodulcechisme.com

The team members are wary of upgrading, yet think the present one could crash at any moment. This might be totally off the wall crazy, so forgive my naiveté (euphemism for stupidity). If it is so dicey to upgrade, what if I made a completely new site, would it be possible to cut and paste the long lists of archived articles, etc. from the old site into the same location on the new site? And if that works, when the new one is finished, could we transfer the domain name over to the new one, and close the old site down, or could it be set up for one of the automatic transfers that many servers do - for example the new site would be riodulcechisme2.com but when people hit the original URL, it would be directed to the second one? I realize that even if it could be done, it would be a tremendous amount of work, but I have to do something! I don't think the website has ever even been backed up. Just trying to think of possibilities/solutions.

Would greatly appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

Hi, leolam
Sorry for disturbing.
I'm from Portugal and I belong to a cultural association that has a Joomla-built site - acer-pt.org/vmdacer
Problem is: it was built on Joomla 1.0.13 by a fellow member back in 2006/8, but he died two years ago and I can't find someone to help solve the problems on the site: I don't know much about Joomla, nor anybody I know, and I haven't got any help from the portuguese joomla group. Nobody answered.
As you can see, the menus are still visible, but I can't access any page.
Could you give me some advice?

I tried to upgrade to 1.5 using your instructions, and also those I found on https://www.siteground.com/tutorials/jo ... lation.htm. My hgope was that by doing that I could solve some problem (I wish to upgrade to the newer Joomla versions).

I created a "joomla15" folder alongside "vmdacer",and upload a Joomla 1.15 installation to it by FTP using FileZilla, but when I tried to access the installer page nothing appeared.

Is it possible to help us? It would be very nice, I only master some HTML, as you can see on http://www.acer-pt.org, and don't have any solid knowledge about database.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. - you can see how the site worked via www.archive.org: https://web.archive.org/web/20110806161 ... g/vmdacer/
