Make Plugins work in section and category descriptions

Post by mcsmom » Sun Aug 26, 2007 5:07 am

Currently plugins like {loadposition} don't work in the section or category descriptions. It would provide a lot of flexibility in layout and other ways to be able to use them.

Denied : for preformance and caching reasons this is a very bad idea :)

Well, if you really are using the structure as a hierarchy those pages are very important in terms of design since they are the key entry points for major sub areas of a site. So it would just be helpful for making a structure that is useful and attractive to be able to do move complex things on those pages. But I guess there are probably other work arounds? Like if I want to put a menu right there? Or a random image?  Latest news?  It's just that right now you have to over ride the hierarchy if you want to use these features and then you lose the advantages of the hierarchy structure in terms of letting people drill down.Maybe using plugins isn't the answer though. I don't know enough about the issues of caching etc.

But you really have to admit that, just as one example, the on the fly listings of categories and content items are really problematic both in function (can't control templating for individual items; can't list empty categories) and appearance. You really want to make a menu to have it look good and have full functionality. And you don't always want that menu over on the side.  So that's why I want to be able to put a module into the description.  :)

Enabling this on a per-module basis (custom-html module where is the most common use of plugins) was the solution used in 1.0.x.
This may be a bad idea for purists, but users do need it.

I strongly suggest to let the user choose the solution they wish and not force them into losing this feature.
If only for legacy purposes...

JM,

What you are talking about is the content plugins, right?

Yes.
Issue is all over the place. Custom modules as well as Section/Category descriptions.

i will add my voice to this, make it a user selectable option per module as it was in Joomla 1.0.x

At least for legacy sake! we were caught quite by surprise by this when migrating a site from Joomla 1.0.x -> 1.5.x

We use TitleLink http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/ to create links to Content Items inside user created modules. and after migration, Surprise!! non of the links in modules work anymore and the option is missing.

i understand the performance issues, but really the ability to effectively migrate 1.0 sites to 1.5 without major headaches should be a top priority.
