Repository: Exchanging metadata using OAI-PMH

Post by jdebruijn » Wed Jan 24, 2007 9:20 pm

Hello everybody,

not quite sure if this is the right forum,
because what I'm looking for may be a bot instead of a component,
but anyway: I'm looking for a component which turns the joomla cms into a repository.

I work for an educational organisation in the Netherlands,
and we find sharing our content (lessons, eduware, powerpoints etc) very important,
both institutional wide as with other schools.
We support this openness and we are looking for technology to help us.

To make our content searchable we have to add metadata or tags to all our contentitems.
There are components for this "tagging", so this should not be a problem.

But we want to be a "metadata provider" so other organisations can "harvest" this metadata.
Usually, these harvesters have their own search capabilities, and they link to the content,
from which the harvested the metadata.

There is a protocol for this: OAI-PMH
The Protocol for Metadata Harvesting, developed bij de Open Archives Initiative.

A lot of universities are experimenting with this in joined projects,
and although they use open source software,
I see advantages in using Joomla.

If there is not a component of mambot to do this,
does anybody know where to start?
Are there developers in this forum,
working for schools, libraries or museums,
who also see the need for this?

Thanks!

Hi!
I'm dealing right now with the exact same problem.

There is a repository working under DSpace and I need to make a certain part of that information to run inside a Joomla site.

Have you figured it out?

Cheers

Hello,

I am also looking for a solution to add OAI-PMH protocol to our Joomla site. There is an extension that allows adding Dublin Core metadata to the article descriptions in our Joomla site, and if there were an XML file for OAI harvesting, it would be possible to harvest that after registering the site with OpenDOAR or ROAR.

So far, no search on OAI-PMH in the Joomla site has turned up any results. I am not much of a programmer to write php or other codes, so I will stay tuned. There is no rush. We are using CONTENTdm which supports OAI-PMH, and it is possible to catalog the individual essays with a link to the page, and then extend the discovery of Joomla content via proxy within Joomla...if this counts as a solution.

All the best!
