Is this useful to anyone?

Post by artfultodger » Sat Jul 15, 2006 6:26 pm

Hi

Back when I was first building my Joomla site I had to create a quick and easy guide for using Joomla so that the other people I work with could learn at their own pace, leaving me free to work!

Thankfully everyone got up to speed pretty quickly and the guide became a little defunct. Also since I changed my template the guide breaks the layout too because of the huge images, haha.

I was gonna delete it, however it seems wasteful to not share the guide with others if it could help them.

Here's the link to the guide: http://socialinsight.net//index.php?opt ... Itemid=102

I'm willing to just share the HTML of the items if people want to reproduce it, let me know. :)

Yes, it was, thanks.  I put together a set of training guides (I did the training) for the position of Author (front-end), Editor (front-end and back-end) and Administrator (back-end).

Unfortunately, after a computer crash, I only manged to salvage the Author guide.  If you're interested, I'll send you a copy.  I really need to re-write those other guides!

I'd like a copy if I can, even if it's a base for what I was thinking of writing :)

Thanks for the offer Jules, your guide could be handy for me since every registered member on my site is going to be an Author! :)

I've copied the HTML into text documents and put the images in a folder and zipped the whole lot up for anyone who wants a copy.

Obviously I am gonna leave the guide up on my site in case anyone wants to visit it, or even link to it. However I would appreciate it if no one hotlinks directly to the images and instead creates their own image links using the images I provided in the zip.

Thanks ya.

artfultodger,

Would you be interested in having your guides published in the Recommended Reading section of the Help Site?

Sure, more than happy for them to be put to good use.  :)

Would you be linking to them directly? If so, I will preserve the links.

Ideally, it would be to publish them directly into the Help Site.  You would retain all copyrights, but we do ask that your work be licenced Creative Commons. Please contact me by pm.

Thanks!

I am planning on working on a more user friendly version of this guide for first time Joomla admin users. Likely the new guide will be a linked multi page guide, rather than an article format.

The reason being that I now have the need to educate paying clients on basic Joomla features for another site I am involved with. I think this existing Joomla guide has a few to many innuendos and spelling errors to fit the bill!

In the meantime, if you want to include this existing guide somewhere on the Joomla.org site, by all means do so with my blessings - This guide has certainly been popular, one of my highest referrers is Joomla.org.. lol

If you need to contact me about any of this just mail me at Rob"at"Socialinsight.net

Has this guide found a permanent home since? The links above all appear to be dead but I could really do with something similar for training some new admin users for a recently developed site.

Many thanks in advance.

We have Joomla 1.5 out now, so a new guide is available for that, start here: http://docs.joomla.org/Beginners

Brad
Thanks, although I was aware of that. My 'recently developed' site is unfortunately J v1.0 as the template used was only available as a v1.0 version when I started. It has now been v1.5-ified but I haven't got round to the migration yet.

I've cobbled together a training resource from 4 or 5 on-line sources and some self-generated diagrams - hopefully that'll keep them busy...
