File permissions

I would appreciate to find information in installation section like this:
1) after uploading and before installation: file permissions and directory perm should be: .................................
2) after installation: file permissions and directory perm should be: ...............................

As there are many questions and answers on the forum about file permissions and ftp layer I think sth does not work well...

I too am having a lot of problems installing extensions, and I think it's down to permissions on folders. As it's running on a local machine, I am going to try setting the file/folder permissions to full control for now, but would really appreciate some kind of confirmation of what the correct permissions are.

**UPDATE**

After setting the whole of my joomla site to let users have full access, all extensions install with no problems, so my file permissions are definitely causing me problems. Only thing is - I have no documentation to refer to......
