Suggestions: Sections & Categories

Post by kper » Fri Oct 28, 2005 12:21 pm

Could I possibly suggest that in the documentation you expand slightly upon the implications of unpublishing a section or category and why you might want to do that? Rather than just saying "Click the icon to change the publish status of the category." The implications are obvious for a Content Item, but less so for Sections and Categories.

I would offer you the information to slot in, but I don't have it - currently searching.

For instance, my News section is unpublished, but the Current News category within it is published and I then link a Category Blog menu item to that Category, so all the news items show up perfectly well even though the section they reside in is not published.

This seemed logical because I only need one news category on my site, but I don't actually know whether I've done the right thing, because it is difficult to find an explanation of the implications.

For example, if I decided to use SEFAdvance with my current arrangement would the URL be http://www.mysite.com/current-news or http://www.mysite.com/news/current-news and does publishing the Section make any difference to this or to anything else? What do I need to consider when choosing to unpublish a Section or Category? Will unpublishing my Current News category mean I can no longer link to individual news content items, nor put them on the front page? Or will it just mean the blog listing of them is no longer available?

I don't know (as yet) what difference it makes to what, but perhaps you do and could put it in the docs?

Thank you for your suggestions!  I felt that it deserved it's own thread.

The Help Screen "The Category Manager" (as well as any of the other Help Screens) is meant to be a basic explanation of the particular screen in the Administrator.

But we understand that there needs to be documentation that goes beyond the basics.  So we willl soon be publishing 3rd Party Documentation that can go into much more depth.

These 3rd party documentation will not be official documentation, as the authors will retain their copyrights and will be the responsable for writing and maintaining their documentation.

3rd Party documentation can be mini or indepth tutorials.  All documention will be approved by members of the 3rd Party Documentation team before being accepted for publication on the Help Site.

We are still determining the criteria for approval and will make the criteria grill available to the public.

Thank you!

My efforts so far. The truth is out there, as they say! Why so hard to discover it?

The invitation is now open for anyone on the community to write a 3rd party tutorial on Sections and Categories.
