Documentation Engine

Post by mawilson » Wed Nov 09, 2005 6:58 pm

I'm working on a Jooma! based intranet site. We need to post various procedure documents. The presentation on the help site looks like it might fit. Is it generally available or a custom hack?

We are using Docman to manage the section on 3rd Party documentation!

kenmcd,
Could you elaborate on how you set it up within Joomla?

Michelle,
Docman appears to be an upload/download tool to support static documents which seems ideal for your intended application. I am looking for a means to maintain and dynamically present living (i.e. subject to change) documents within the Joomla framework.

Thanks - but I did not setup help.joomla - just another user.

Your Joomla should work just the same as the Help site.
Most of us on the Doc Team edit the pages you see from the front-end.

What is it that you are trying to figure out - the sections, categories, articles set-up?
Page layout - the design?

Ken,

I'd like to know more about the structure. for example:

How are the manual links in the left column generated?

Are you using Weblinks for the TOC (one looks that way, the others don't)?

I get the impression that the content is actually a collection of static pages.

I guess I'm looking for something like SimpleDoc or PHP Doc System that is integrated with Joomla.

I don't have access to the back-end so I don't know exactly how the menus are implemented.
Shayne/manuman structured and maintains the site.

The content pages you see are not static HTML - they are normal Joomla content pages which all of us can edit directly from the page when we are logged-in.

Since help.joomla.org is "just Joomla," you can use are well organized help site to answer all your answers for constructing the links and content.  If you are wanting information about menus in the left column, start here:

http://help.joomla.org/content/category/16/152/148/
http://help.joomla.org/content/category/16/152/148/

If you want more info on making content, start here:

http://help.joomla.org/content/view/68/146/

The help.joomla.org site is only made with what Joomla offers and is organized in the backend. The only thing special here is the customized template.
From the beginning...

Hi there,

The menu's are manualy set up...

We have the Main menu in which most of the items are links to section tables (this is a core feature of Joomla!, nothing fancy here).

Our intention was to have sub-menus for the categories however the current template doesn't allow expanding sub-menu items, hence  we have compromised by then creating secondary menu's for each Main menu item. So for example if you go to the Administrator Manual, the Administrator Manual menu appears below the main menu. This is a seperate menu which is configured via the module setup to only display when the Administrator Manual is open. Once again this is a core feature, nothing has been hacked or added to allow this to happen.

Ditto, each of the other main menu items has an accompanying secondary menu that displays accordingly.

Eventually we will do away with the secondary menus and just use sub menu items, this will take far less configuration and provide much better usability.

I hope this explanation may help a bit.

Cheers
