Help site entry page

Post by eyezberg » Fri Jan 27, 2006 8:20 pm

Wouldn't it be time to move away from "Mambo" right from the 1st page on Help, and concentrate on Joomla;
diversify the welcome page with presentation of API, installation, ...?

Moved to the Doc forum.

As the doc team is responsible for the help site, they are best suited to answering this question :)

I completely agree with you Joe.  I think it we need to think about who is visiting the help site and for what purpose, then tailor a front page to assist these folks as much as possible.  I doubt that migration from Mambo is a major factor anymore.  However, developer stuff like the API will soon get a website of its own (developer.joomla.org) so we need to think more about the needs of general users/admins.

Concrete suggestions?

Chris.

Erm... no :)
But I'll think about it and post back, agree with all you say 100%, had forgotten about the soon?-to-come dev site.. ;)

Thanks Brad ;)

Chris, here's what I came up with so far:
I was thinking about a page with modules for different sections, something like Reys mods, so you can easily rearrange the page layout.
Suggestions:

What is Joomla (presentation)
- origins and evolution (short overview)
- capabilities (link to showcase of sites with short desctiption, maybe allow submissions for this?)
- terminology (excerpts of Glossary and other..)
- planned roadmap (maybe start at 1.1, depending on time of publication..)
- organisation of the developpement (team, SVN, Bugreporting, wishlist, helping, suggeting code etc with links to relevant forums)

Installation and Configuration
- System requierements (PHP & SQl versions and settings etc)
- Installation of Core package (where to get, what to do with it, install process..)
- Basic Site Usage (create content, add/change section/cat, upload media...)
- Upgrading and Patching existing sites (what to do with a patch, how to upgrade / migrate etc..)

Going further
- Installing extra Com, Mod, Plug, Template, Language (where to get them, click plugins to publish/enable...)
- Using SEF / SEO options and software (core, 3rd party free/commercial, htaccess, mod_rewrite,..)
- Changing the site language (where are official lang packs, how to install, how to activate..)
- Multilingual Content (Fish)
- ...

Security Considerations
- tips from the forum threads to enhance security

Basic Templating
- gather content from various forum sections, plenty available..

patTemplate
- what is it
- how to use it
- Andrews tutorials etc..

Troubleshooting FAQs

not sure about all items, some might be better off on the dev site, some other stuff might be missing.. just to get this started ;)

Hi Joe,

Just in relation to the Templating and patTemplate content, this will be in the developers documentation on the new site. We have a small team formed inside the Developer Documentation Team who will be looking after this.

The other items you have mentioned would most probably still be in the current help site so I'll leave that to Michelle to comment on.

Hi Joe,

Don't forget we have the "main" site at http://www.joomla.org too.  Perhaps your "What is Joomla?" items should be there instead?

The way I see it, http://www.joomla.org is aimed at promoting Joomla! and providing enough information for someone to decide whether it might be suitable for their application.  The help.joomla.org site takes over with assistance in actually installing Joomla! and getting it running, then how to do stuff with it and so on.  Anything developer related should be on developer.joomla.org (with forge.joomla.org and api.joomla.org being satellites from it).

I'll leave Michelle to comment further as I'm currently focussed on the API documentation.

Regards,
Chris.

Ok, so if templating and pT are removed, and introductory links too, there's 4 main areas left:
* install & config
* intermediate to advanced usage
* troubleshooting faqs
* securing a J! site (might be moved into point 2..)

anyone gonna add anything? no other ideas?

Hi Joe,

I have fired an email off to Michelle so she can join the discussion as the remaining points really do concern her.

eyezberg,

This is something that I have been thinking about for the last month.  Any chance that I can convince you to come back and help out with this.

The main reason that nothing has been done on the main page of the help site and many other items is that we do not have anyone to do the work.  The volunteers that we do have have been concentrating their energies on the admin manual and some other activities.

Everything that happens - happens because we have volunteers!  The more volunteers that we have the more we can accomplish.

If you do not have time, that is ok, we'll take your suggestions and see what we can do with the volunteer time we have.

Hi,

That sounds amazing, but not surprising though. We experience the same in the french community: a lot of people are interested in collaborating but when comes the time to take the step and start working, no one left  ???

Regarding the Help site entry page, I would suggest a "Joomla! quick start guide" article to orientate new Joomla! users. If you guys are interested I will post a draft this WE.

Hornos,

We are in the process of developing a third party documentation team to evaluate 3 party documentation for our Recommended Reading section  on the help site.

Would you be interested in helping this team?  Your idea of writing a "Joomla! quick start guide" article sounds good.  Let me know when it is done.
