Proposal for the Account Expiration Control Component

Post by skOre » Fri Feb 16, 2007 10:37 pm

As I mentioned in that other thread, I would like to discuss whether it is a good idea for mentors to choose my project for the GSoC.

My Dedication
Since I started working on the AEC, I have found that it is filling a spot in the software market that is solely occupied by commercial and/or proprietary software packages. This and the response of the users have led me to decide that I want to pursue its development fulltime (besides my study of Computer Engineering). Whether or not I will be accepted by the mentors (and by google of course), I know that I am working on something that is desperately needed, this stipend would basically only help me to pay the bills and be less relying on our subscriptions at globalnerd.

I also think that this component is of great value for joomla itself - I have looked around other CMS and the situation is quite the same there - some free solutions that do little things or commercial&proprietary packages. So I may go on a limb here, but if I was looking for a CMS that also does paid subscription management...

Why its a key technology
Many areas in the internet have made the shift from web1.0 towards web2.0 - where before it was mostly commercial websites along with small and personal sites, we now have community driven sites that challenge the big players through sheer popularity and efficiency. In my eyes, the future will call for new ways of funding these projects and while there are many possibilities to do so, I always found a subscription system (make more money by having more people paying small amounts) to be enormously efficient.

What is planned for the near future
The most notable changes will be the support of MicroPayments, or using the AEC to trigger features in other components. Technically, this will be made possible through MicroPlans (where normal Plans are the ones that control Account Expiration) which can hold a number of actions - basically an abstraction layer to apply any function you like. Furthermore, I want to install a token system so that admins can control selling content on a granular level ("Buy a package of five tokens and use them for five downloads"). On the "nice to have side", I'm also working on a Coupon system which is a very much requested feature and only found in the major (read: expensive) software packages like aMember.

...yet this all is being worked on before the GSoC...

What I would like to do in the GSoC
Having laid the foundation for a more interesting integration with other components, I would like to dedicate a lot of the time working on integration with other FOSS components which can, in my opinion, help to tie development for joomla together.

The major point though is Joomla 1.5 compatibility. Now for me, this is even a bigger issue since we planned on being multi-cms compatible since some time. So our first step into this direction would be to support both, Joomla 1.0.x and 1.5. This will also mean that by doing this work, I will be able to put together an upgrading guide for other component programmers, which can only be of great benefit in my opinion (I wish I would have one myself...).

So - what do you guys say - would this already be enough to make a project?

Sure, the latest development release works fine with Joomla 1.5.

Skore;
hi. need our help as i am a complete newbie to Joomla and extension.
I want to develop a membership site. the login component and registration is working fine.

I have installed latest Joomla 1.5.9 successfully. I proceeded to install AEC (Account Expiration Control) and it shows it is installed well. I have followed instructions on AEC manual to configure it. It all goes well until i get to the instructions of the "Setting" tab on AEC. When i click on Setting, it goes to a blank page and gives me a "500 internal error" page.

You seem to answer many questions on this forum. anyway you can help me on this? i would greatly appreciate your help.

alex
