Summer of Code : Geo Component

Post by mmaison » Tue May 29, 2007 9:26 pm

Hi everybody,

I'm one of the (really) lucky students selected for this Summer of Code. My project is called Geo Component and will enable users to geo-tag their profile and article in Joomla!.
By geo-tagging, I mean to put, in the case of a profile, your geographic location as coordinates. Coordinates can be entered directly or set using a map, something already more accessible for everyone !

The purpose is then to be able to generate GeoRSS or KML feeds containing all these new information. The other goal is to push people to use these data to build more features in Joomla! like:
- language auto selection
- groups based on location
- all the crazy ideas you can have !

The reason why I open this topic is to set a discussion area between the whole Joomla! community and me.

Yes if you have an idea you can propose it
Yes your opinion interest me
Yes I also count on the community to test my component and give me feedback
Yes I'm also here to provide help if people are interested in the features I mentioned above

My blog where I'll try to post my feeling and work on the project : http://www.mickaelmaison.com/

I count on you to keep this topic active and to avoid flood.

Very cool! looking forward to seeing your progress. Are you planning support for GPX or tracks?

Support for GPX will be excellent.

I was already thinking of allowing user to enter tracks or polygons.
I'll consider your idea, it'll be neat to be able to upload a GPX with an article.

I will post soon more specifications of the project and information on my works.

GPX would be great, a bunch of tools are available for it.  It says on the web site it's an open standard though I don't see any specific license info posted.

looking forward to seeing your progress.

Sorry for this long period without updates ...

I've created a page with links to my reports and the link to the forge project: http://www.mickaelmaison.com/summer-of-code/
In the SVN you can find a SQL dump under the install folder if you want to test the component.

I'm open to every kind of feedback as long as it's constructive :)
