JoomlaCode News used to Advertise Commercial Product

Post by kenmcd » Thu Dec 10, 2009 8:46 pm

.
The DOCman project news was used to announce a new commercial version.

DOCman 1.5 is now available

Read the announcement on the official blog:
http://blog.joomlatools.eu/2009/12/docm ... lable.html

Get it here:
http://www.joomlatools.eu/store.html
The JoomlaCode front page says " . . . it is not for commercial projects . . . "

I guess I need come clarification of what is acceptable use.
Is it OK to use JoomlaCode News to announce the availability of commercial versions?

Ken, it may not have been picked up on the videos but we did ask for comment about whether commercial devs would be interested in a subscription service for JoomlaCode to host their projects. This could be economical for non-sys-admin people (er, like me, I use CVSDude).

Not sure that answers your question but it's pertinent to your point.

For what it's worth, I have no issue with DOCman going commercial. I think it makes a lot of sense that such an important Open Source sub-project of the Joomla community be reliably funded.

Hi Andrew,

I do not have any issue with them going commercial either.
Perhaps that will accelerate the update cycle. ;-)

My understanding is that JoomlaCode is generally only a place to keep your open source code,
and not a place simply to feed a commercial project via news releases and the search.

What prompted me to ask is I am subscribed to that project's news so I received an email of the news release announcing this commercial product release.
Seemed a bit odd coming from JoomlaCode.

So I am seeking some clarification of what is acceptable use.

Regards,

Ken

Hi,

The Joomlacode frontpage states:
# this is a developer resource for Open Source code ... it is not for commercial projects, non-code projects (ie: it is not a file hosting facility)
This is rather vague, so I assumed that the same rules regarding licensing apply as on the JED.

DOCman 1.4 and 1.5 are open source, GPL, and compliant with the Joomla licensing.
DOCman 1.4 is still available free of charge, on joomlacode. The only reference to DOCman 1.5 is the (very short) news item. If the consensus is that this is not acceptable, I'm happy to take the news item down.

Taking down everything else as well seems rather drastic though, as it would deny users access to the gratis DOCman 1.4, and to all older releases stored there in case someone needs them.

There was no discussion about deleting the existing open source non-commercial extensions and code.
I only asked about one issue.

Is it acceptable to use the JoomlaCode news to advertise commercial products?
Real simple question.
Should have a real simple Yes or No answer.

It's just a bit more complicated than that. The JED differentiates between GPL, commercial GPL, and non-GPL. So should Joomlacode.

Unless I am corrected, the simple answer is "no", commercial works shouldn't be advertised on JoomlaCode (or the Forum) whereas they most certainly can be on the JED and Connect, etc.

I don't think you need to take it down. DOCman is in a fairly unique position as one of the staples of the Joomla ecosystem and people have been *waiting* for this news for a very long time :) Anyway, great to see the new version and the new business model. Hope it works out really well for you guys and your user community. I'm certainly buying a copy to revise my Finder search plugin :)

I've unpublished the news item off the front page and sent a note to the rest of the team. Since DocMan is not using JC for much beyond hosting the previous non-commercial GPL version, this should bewill be fine. Eventually I guess that will just get lost in time.

JoomlaCode does differentiate between GPL and non-GPL and the commercial and non-commercial varieties of both. In fact it is very specific - no commercial projects and it should be GPL (or GPL compatible, LGPL library would be fine). I'm happy enough for you to have the announcement on your news page as an interim measure, we just shouldn't carry it on the homepage. Eventually you'll transition completely of JoomlaCode so it shouldn't make a difference.
