Translation files not being handled as UTF8?

Post by Juddster » Sat Jun 30, 2007 3:46 pm

Hi,

I'm running Joomla 1.5 in Spanish.

The Spanish characters don't display correctly.

If I change the encoding of my browser to Western European (ISO), then they display correctly.

Spanish characters stored in the database *are* displayed correctly, which leads me to suspect that the text stored in the translation files are *not* being handled as UTF8 characters.

Any comments on how to fix this much appreciated, or at least a nod that it's a known bug!

Which Spanish beta pack are you using? Link?

Hi, it's not just the translation pack for Joomla itself, but also the CB plugin language pack and the Fireboard language pack. Basically, any text file that is being used in translations - as I said, the Spanish stored in the database is displayed correctly.

The packs I am using are:
Joomla 1.5beta : described here http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/spanishlanguage/frs/ and files here: http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsre ... eta2v1.zip

Community Builder: described here http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/c_b/frs/ and files here: http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsre ... plugin.zip

Fireboard: http://www.bestofjoomla.com/component/o ... Itemid,41/

Interested to hear if anyone else has this issue with Joomla 1.5 and languages.

Did not try Fireboard or CB, but the language pack you are using is fine here on the nightly build. This whether in admin or frontend.

Thanks for investigating. Your comment puzzled me, as I had tested thoroughly - then I realised why it APPEARS to be working correctly.

The translation pack is NOT using Spanish characters, instead they are using something different!
e.g.
LAST UPDATED=Ultima actualización
instead of
LAST UPDATED=Ultima actualización

If you amend the translation file to use í, ó etc, then the site does not display correctly! So it still looks like Joomla1.5 is not correctly displaying UTF8 characters if they are stored in text files.

Wrong:
JOOMLA WARNING=Advertencia de Joomla
LAST=Ultimo
LAST UPDATED=Ultima actualización
LDAP_START_TLS FAILED=falló ldap_start_tls
LEFT=Izquierda
from root/language/es-ES/es-ES.ini

I guess you don't need a screen capture and do believe me.  :)

Well, that's just weird. I even ran a text search, which found nothing in those files for "ultimó".

In fact, i tried a test with 1.0.12 - there are two Spanish language files (http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/spanis ... age_id=115) , one for UTF8 and one for ISO. The UTF8 file results in incorrect displays of characters, the ISO is fine.

I don't get it, why am I having so many problems?!? What is it with UTF8 that generates so many issues?
